A remake of the two-dimensional platform game released in 1986. The new version was developed by Korean studio CFK. The player assumes the role of the titular Wonder Boy – a caveman whose girlfriend was kidnapped by the Dark King. The protagonist attempts to rescue Tina while trying to take care of the villain.
In 1986 a two-dimensional platform game Wonder Boy was developed by Escape (currently known as Westone Bit Entertainment). Wonder Boy Returns for PC is a remake of that project. It was developed by Korean team CFK and published by SEGA.
Wonder Boy Returns for PC is a game that tells the story of the titular Wonder Boy. He is a caveman who lives peacefully with his girlfriend named Tina. One day, the girl is kidnapped by the evil Dark King. The protagonist has no other choice than to free her from the hands of the villain.
The title is a classic platform game in which the player must complete a series of varied levels among which there are icy realm and a paradise island. Wonder Boy is a very talented protagonist – he can not only jump, but throw axes, ride a skateboard and do other things as well. The mentioned items can be found in eggs that must be broken. In addition to that, sometimes the player will find stronger power-ups like a temporary immortality. It all becomes useful both during exploration and while fighting many opponents (spiders, bees, penguins and other). From time to time the player will also face some powerful bosses. Wonder Boy Returns for PC offers a few completely new levels and creatures.
While the story and the gameplay of PC version of Wonder Boy Returns are the same as in the original title, the graphics were greatly changed. It is still a two-dimensional game, but it was adapted to high resolutions, all backgrounds and character models were created anew and the title was enriched with effective animations and light effects performed during the attacks of some bosses.

If you feel the need to revisit Wonder Boy or Adventure Island, which were ported to pretty much everything available in the late 80's, you might give Wonder Boy Returns Remix a shot. For the rest of us, though, there are two much better Wonder Boy games on the Switch that you'll probably enjoy a whole lot more.

Wonder Boy Returns is a remake that plays it safe. While it does add a few new additions like different playable characters and an improved difficulty balance, this is pretty much the same game you remember but with a coat of paint that may or may be not appealing to you.
