Over the years, American studio Visual Concepts has developed two main pillars of its business. These are the sports series NBA 2K and WWE 2K (starting with WWE 2K19, released in 2018, co-developed with Yuke's). The latter, dedicated to wrestling, includes the WWE 2K26 described here.

Gameplay

In terms of mechanics, WWE 2K26 does not differ significantly from what players have become accustomed to in previous positions under this banner. During the game we take control of wrestlers and wrestlers and fight fights in the ring, attacking, using holds or throws, or making use of special moves. The fights are accompanied by commentary by Booker T and Wade Barrett.

WWE 2K26 delivers in spades. While some questionable decisions around progression hamper the overall experience, alongside a litany of microtransactions invading some modes, there’s so much to sink your teeth into - whether it’s the excellent CM Punk Showcase or the ever-brilliant Universe mode. It’s a game for every type of wrestling fan, and continues to be one of the best annualised sports titles out there.

Xbox Tavern: 8 / 10 by Jamie Collyer

A downer to end with, but I do want to reiterate that the game otherwise is excellent in terms of quality. The roster (at least what is unlocked to start with) is stacked, the match types are more varied than ever, and there are so many modes here to play with I am honestly staggered how anyone could find the time to explore them all properly. Showcase does CM Punk justice, while MyRise is a great character builder for our custom superstar, and the creation suite is even more mind boggling in its scope than ever.

The main pros of the game

  • Improved Gameplay: Many users noted that the in-ring gameplay has seen significant improvements, with better physics and fluidity. The addition of ragdoll physics and new match types (like Inferno and I Quit matches) has been well-received.
  • Enhanced Presentation: The graphics and animations are reportedly top-tier, providing a visually appealing experience.
  • Creation Suite: The game offers an extensive creation suite, allowing players to create custom wrestlers, arenas, and more, with increased slots for customization.
  • CM Punk Showcase: The showcase mode featuring CM Punk is considered solid and engaging, providing a nostalgic experience for fans.

The main cons of the game

  • Aggressive Monetization: The introduction of the "Ringside Pass" system has been heavily criticized. Players feel forced to grind for content they have already paid for or to spend additional money for tier skips, making the game feel like a pay-to-win model.
  • Locked Content: A significant portion of the roster and other features are locked behind the Ringside Pass, leading to frustration among players who expected to have immediate access after purchasing the premium edition.
  • Technical Issues: Many users reported bugs, crashes, and connectivity issues, particularly with online modes. The game’s performance has been described as subpar, with lag and freezing during matches.
  • Community Creations Split: The separation of community creations between PC and consoles has left the PC community feeling isolated and lacking in content.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Cross-Platform Community Creations: Users expressed disappointment over the lack of cross-platform sharing, which limits access to a broader range of creations.
  • Improved Universe Mode: While some improvements were noted, many players still feel that Universe Mode lacks depth and suffers from bugs that have persisted across multiple iterations.
  • Story Mode Depth: MyRise and other story modes were criticized for being shallow and repetitive, lacking the engaging narratives that fans expect.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Players noted that basic features, like the ability to access certain content without grinding, should be standard in a premium game but are instead locked behind a paywall.

Conclusion

  • WWE 2K26 has made strides in gameplay and presentation but is marred by aggressive monetization practices, technical issues, and a lack of accessibility to content that players feel should be readily available. The community's response indicates a strong desire for a more consumer-friendly approach in future titles.
