Xeodrifter is a 2D adventure and arcade game with platformer elements, which belongs to a subgenre called Metroidvania. The was created by Renegade Kid, an independent American studio responsible for the popular Mutant Mudds Deluxe platformer released on PC and consoles in 2013.
In Xeodrifter, we play as a lonely astronaut who explores the surface of four alien and dangerous planets. We can go to any of them using our spacecraft. The action is presented in the form known from classic 2D platformers. Players are slowly exploring selected worlds, discovering power-ups hidden in various nooks and crannies that unlock useful abilities such as diving which allows them to get to previously inaccessible places. Weapon upgrades are obtained in the same way - we can turn them on and off depending on the situation.
As in Mutant Mudds Deluxe, there are certain areas of the level where we can avoid obstacles, such as water reservoirs or enemy missiles, jumping between the foreground and the background of the game. What is interesting, the whole game has only a single boss. We will fight it many times on every planet. With time, however, these duels become more and more difficult, and our opponent begins to have more complex attacks and moves, which we must memorize.
The graphics in Xeodrifter were done in a classic style, imitating the atmosphere of the biggest 8-bit hits. The gameplay is accompanied by dynamic electronic music composed by Roth Sothy, Matthew Gambrell and Brian Altano.
