Yakuza Zero Director's Cut is a new version of the 2015 third-person action game, enriched with new content. Similar to the original, as well as previous parts of the series and a number of its spin-offs, the game was created by the SEGA corporation.

New features in Director's Cut version

Yakuza 0 Director's Cut stands out from its original mainly due to the new game mode. We are talking about the Red Light Raid multiplayer mode, designed for up to four players. It features dozens of characters waiting to be unlocked. In addition, the developers enriched this version with completely new cut-scenes. The icing on the cake is the optional English dubbing.

Like a Dragon / Yakuza Game Series

Yakuza (Japanese. Ryu ga Gotoku - Like a Dragon) is a series that began as TPP action adventure games, while in 2020 began a love affair with the jRPG genre. The essence of gameplay in productions under this banner are spectacular clashes, in which we mostly use our own fists, white weapons such as clubs or samurai swords, as well as elements of the environment, such as trash cans or bicycles. Firearms are present, but usually do not play a major role. The protagonists have numerous fighting styles, which we can upgrade. Of great importance are impressive finishers, in which opponents are eliminated in a particularly impressive way.

“Director’s Cut” is the right term for this Yakuza 0 release. The biggest addition is additional minutes of narrative footage, and it’s been spruced up to work on a handheld console for the first time. That’s really all it needed, because it was already the pinnacle of one of the greatest JRPG properties we’ve ever seen.

Noisy Pixel: 9 / 10 by Colin Buchanan

Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut retails for $50 USD, and I can’t say that doesn’t feel like a high asking price – like I said in my review of Ishin! a few years ago, that’s more than what it cost to pick up the entire trilogy of remastered PlayStation 3-only entries. I think it’s ultimately worthwhile because you’re getting a genuinely incredible game that now has an English dub and looks better than ever before, and it’s an absolute no-brainer for any Nintendo fan who has never experienced Yakuza before. As we look forward to Stranger than Heaven, it’s more worth it than ever to look back at this absolute action classic.

The main pros of the game

  • Core Game Quality: Many users still regard *Yakuza 0* as one of the best games in the franchise, with a compelling story and engaging gameplay.
  • New Features:
  • Quality of Life Improvements: The ability to save anywhere and the introduction of an autosave feature have been praised.
  • New Language Options: The addition of English and Chinese voice acting has made the game more accessible to a broader audience.
  • Red Light Raid Multiplayer Mode: Although opinions on its execution vary, some players enjoyed the new multiplayer mode as a fun addition.

The main cons of the game

  • Price Increase: The significant price jump from the original game to the Director's Cut (from around $20 to $50) has been widely criticized as excessive, especially given the limited new content.
  • Delisting of the Original: The removal of the original *Yakuza 0* from sale has frustrated many fans, as it restricts access to a version that many consider superior.
  • Content Quality: The new cutscenes have been criticized for being unnecessary and detracting from the original story's emotional impact, with some users labeling them as retcons.
  • Performance Issues: Some players reported bugs and performance issues, including audio problems and graphical glitches, which detracted from the experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Visual and Graphical Upgrades: Users expected significant graphical improvements or remastering, which were largely lacking. Many noted that the game still had visual issues like poorly scaled UI and no meaningful texture upgrades.
  • Meaningful New Content: Critics mentioned that the new cutscenes and multiplayer mode felt underdeveloped and unnecessary, arguing that they did not justify the price increase.
  • Transfer of Save Data: Players expressed disappointment that save data from the original game could not be transferred to the Director's Cut, further emphasizing the lack of incentive to switch versions.

Summary

  • In summary, while *Yakuza 0 Director's Cut* retains the core appeal of the original game, its reception has been marred by concerns over pricing, the delisting of the original, and the perceived lack of substantial improvements or meaningful new content.
