Yakuza Zero Director's Cut is a new version of the 2015 third-person action game, enriched with new content. Similar to the original, as well as previous parts of the series and a number of its spin-offs, the game was created by the SEGA corporation.

New features in Director's Cut version

Yakuza 0 Director's Cut stands out from its original mainly due to the new game mode. We are talking about the Red Light Raid multiplayer mode, designed for up to four players. It features dozens of characters waiting to be unlocked. In addition, the developers enriched this version with completely new cut-scenes. The icing on the cake is the optional English dubbing.

Like a Dragon / Yakuza Game Series

Yakuza (Japanese. Ryu ga Gotoku - Like a Dragon) is a series that began as TPP action adventure games, while in 2020 began a love affair with the jRPG genre. The essence of gameplay in productions under this banner are spectacular clashes, in which we mostly use our own fists, white weapons such as clubs or samurai swords, as well as elements of the environment, such as trash cans or bicycles. Firearms are present, but usually do not play a major role. The protagonists have numerous fighting styles, which we can upgrade. Of great importance are impressive finishers, in which opponents are eliminated in a particularly impressive way.

Nintendo Life: 9 / 10 by PJ O'Reilly

Yakuza 0 is the best of the traditional-styled Yakuza games, with the most complex story and interesting characters of the lot. It's also the ideal place for newcomers to get started with this weird and wonderful series. The new multiplayer mode is a little throwaway, for sure, and the fights do get repetitive (turn-based Yakuza FTW), but otherwise, this is a phenomenal port of an epic adventure that's now my favourite way to get down on the mean streets of 1980s Tokyo and Osaka.

The Nerd Stash: 8 / 10 by Julio La Pine

Yakuza 0: Director's Cut is an excellent launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2 that showcases its technical capabilities. However, some of the new additions make it feel like the inferior version of this legendary entry.

Noisy Pixel: 9 / 10 by Colin Buchanan

Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut retails for $50 USD, and I can’t say that doesn’t feel like a high asking price – like I said in my review of Ishin! a few years ago, that’s more than what it cost to pick up the entire trilogy of remastered PlayStation 3-only entries. I think it’s ultimately worthwhile because you’re getting a genuinely incredible game that now has an English dub and looks better than ever before, and it’s an absolute no-brainer for any Nintendo fan who has never experienced Yakuza before. As we look forward to Stranger than Heaven, it’s more worth it than ever to look back at this absolute action classic.

The main pros of the game

  • Core Gameplay: The game retains the engaging gameplay and storyline that made the original Yakuza 0 a beloved title. Many players still consider it one of the best in the franchise.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Features such as autosave and the ability to save anywhere enhance the gaming experience.
  • New Language Support: The addition of English and Chinese voice acting, along with other language localizations, makes the game more accessible to a broader audience.
  • Performance: Some players noted improved performance and stability compared to the original version.
  • Red Light Raid Mode: The new multiplayer mode, while not universally praised, adds a new way to experience the game with friends.

The main cons of the game

  • Price Increase: The game is criticized for its high price point of $50, especially as the original was often available for much less. Players feel this price is unjustified given the minimal new content.
  • Delisting of the Original: The removal of the original Yakuza 0 from sale has angered many fans, as it limits access to the classic version of the game.
  • Underwhelming New Content: The new cutscenes have been described as unnecessary, with some players feeling they detract from the original story's impact.
  • Lack of Significant Upgrades: Many reviews pointed out that the graphical improvements are minimal, with some stating that the game feels the same as the original. The file size has also ballooned significantly without clear justification.
  • Multiplayer Mode Issues: The new multiplayer mode is criticized for being lackluster and already dead at launch, with little replay value.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • No Major Visual Upgrades: Many players expected more substantial graphical enhancements, such as HD textures or improved UI scaling, which were not delivered.
  • Retention of Bugs: Some old bugs from the original game remain unaddressed in this release, leading to frustration among fans.
  • Transfer of Save Data: Players were disappointed that they could not transfer their save data from the original version to the Director's Cut.
  • Enhanced Quality of Life Features: While some QoL improvements were made, players noted that many features present in the original game were not carried over or improved.
  • More Substantial New Content: Many users wished for more meaningful additions beyond just a few cutscenes and a multiplayer mode, such as new story arcs or character developments.

Summary

  • In summary, while Yakuza 0 Director's Cut retains the core appeal of the original game, it has faced significant backlash due to its pricing, the delisting of the original game, and the perception that it is a cash grab with insufficient new content.
