Zombi is a first-person action game in which we emerge right in the midst of a zombie invasion that has taken over the capital of the UK. The production is a conversion of ZombiU published in late 2012, which had so far been one of Nintendo WiiU exclusives. Australian studio Straight Right, whose portfolio includes Shift 2: Unleashed for iOS, Mass Effect 3, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution for WiiU, was responsible for porting the game (originally developed by Ubisoft’s internal studio).

Zombi takes place entirely in London, and the game designers decided to recreate many attractions and landmarks of the city in the virtual world. Its inhabitants have been transformed into blood-thirsty zombies and wander the empty streets in search of the few remaining survivors. The player becomes one of those who try to evade danger. Our task is to find hideouts and items allowing us to survive and fend off the undead.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Setting: Many users praised the game's dark, immersive atmosphere, particularly in its depiction of a zombie-infested London. The ambiance was noted as a standout feature that contributes to the horror experience.
  • Permadeath Mechanic: The permadeath system, where players lose their character upon death and must retrieve their items from their zombified former self, was well-received. This feature added tension and strategic depth to gameplay.
  • Replayability: Some players found the game enjoyable enough to warrant multiple playthroughs, especially in survival mode.
  • Unique Gameplay Elements: The game features a mix of melee and ranged combat, with a focus on resource management and careful planning, which resonated with fans of survival horror games.

The main cons of the game

  • Technical Issues: A significant number of users reported bugs, crashes, and audio issues, including missing sound effects and problems launching the game due to the outdated Uplay launcher, which has since been replaced by Ubisoft Connect.
  • Clunky Controls: The controls, particularly in the PC port, were described as awkward and unresponsive, detracting from the overall gameplay experience.
  • Inventory Management: Players found the inventory system cumbersome, with limited space making resource management frustrating.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Some reviews pointed out that the gameplay can become repetitive, particularly in the second half of the game, with less emphasis on survival and more on combat.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Improved Technical Support: Users expressed a desire for better technical support and updates to fix ongoing bugs and issues, especially with the transition from Uplay to Ubisoft Connect.
  • Enhanced Story and Character Development: Many players felt that the story lacked depth and that the characters did not feel significant, diminishing emotional engagement with the gameplay.
  • Multiplayer Features: The absence of the multiplayer mode that was present in the original Wii U version was noted as a loss, as it contributed to the game's unique experience.
  • More Variety in Gameplay Mechanics: Some users wished for additional gameplay mechanics and puzzles to enhance the experience, as the current mechanics felt limited and dated.

Summary

  • Overall, while ZOMBI is appreciated for its atmosphere and unique gameplay mechanics, its technical shortcomings and clunky controls have led to a mixed reception among players, especially in its PC port.
