Valve is not known for spewing up games recklessly and hoping for the best. Suffice to say that fans are still losing their minds over esoteric Half-Life 3, which actually has a chance to see the light of day eventually. Only just recently they officially announced an open secret production they are working on, entitled Deadlock. However, before it was even unveiled, tens of thousands of players (via SteamDB) were already testing it out. It turns out that a good percentage of people who had a chance to try it also have some technical issues. Most of them are related to crashes and error messages with temporary bans announcements. Here we will attempt to analyze what is happening and why.

Deadlock crashes and error messages explained

Deadlock is a game which looks like it was created by the developers who were just having fun with various concepts and came up with something amazing by accident, like mad scientists. For me, it is exactly how great productions are born, and seems like many players share this sentiment. Every rose has its thorn, though. As this title is not even in any official phase of alpha or beta tests, and its Steam page says only that it’s “in early development”, technical issues are more than expected. What appears to trouble fans the most right now are crashes and errors related to temp bans, making it impossible or at least very inconvenient to play this game.

Sadly, there are no official or unofficial fixes for the crashes. If Deadlock crashes during launch for you, there is nothing else to do other than routine activities like verifying the game integrity, updating drivers, and restarting your machine.

There is more that can be done about ban errors, as they appear to stem from several things:

  1. Being reported by other players who are without a doubt less friendly and understanding for newcomers. This can be addressed by reporting this issue on game’s official forum.
  2. There seems to be a bug related to leaving a match too early. This is affecting multiple players, so we can hope that it will eventually be addressed by creators. Also, in this case it’s advised to reach out on the forum.
  3. If you leave in the middle of match, you might get an “abandon” status, which can result in temp ban. If possible, try to avoid doing so.
  4. Some fans on reddit report poor performance of the title. They believe it’s related to memory leaks which eventually lead to game crashes. Of course, if that happens while you’re playing, it has a chance of resulting in temp ban, too.

We have to remember that Deadlock is still basically a concept in testing. The production is in the phase of semi-closed, early run period, as to get access you have to get an invite from a person who already participates in the tests.

Hopefully, we will hear more news related to this title from Valve soon. Until then, we have to try enjoying the game, trusting in creators and letting them polish their gem. Have fun!
