Content Warning took the Internet by storm after getting released for free for a limited time on April 1st. Although the offer has expired and the game is now paid, the free download had been claimed by over 6 million people. Content Warning remains in the top 20 most played games on Steam as of writing this article. With a launch this big, issues are inavoidable, but certain features of the game have been misunderstood as bugs. That is the case with the game not working without an internet connection.

Is There Online Fix for Content Warning?

If your problem in Content Warning is being unable to host a game unless you’re connected to the Internet, we have good and bad news. Firstly, your game isn’t actually broken. However, it’s not a bug, but a feature.

While offline, you can only use some functions of the main menu, such as changing settings. If you try to host a game without going online, though, the client will become stuck in loading state, and you will have to forcibly terminate it, for example with ALT+F4 keys.

Trying to start a playthrough while offline could be an honest mistake on the player’s part, so the necessity to restart the game to get out of it is less than optimal. However, this oversight on the developer’s part comes from the fact that Content Warning is not meant to be played offline.

Content Warning is designed for multiplayer, and does not offer local co-op, which is why it’s unavailable for offline play. While you can technically play solo if you leave the main base without inviting anyone else after hosting, it will be extremely difficult to progress. As a solo player, you will lose access to many essential mechanics, such as freeing your friends from traps, and you will find yourself getting defeated very quickly. To avoid frustration, it’s best to play Content Warning as intented – in online multiplayer.
