Batman vs Fred Flintstone - Rumors of Fighting Game Multiversus

According to the latest rumors, a Super Smash Bros.-like fighting game called Multiversus is being created. It is to feature a vas roster of characters, including, e.g. Batman, Shaggy and Fred Flintstone.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. Warner Bros. Interactive is said to work on a fighting game inspired by Super Smash Bros., called Multiversus;
  2. It would pit famous characters from WB brands including Batman, Gandalf, Shaggy and Fred Flintstone against each other;
  3. The project was said to be inspired by Ultra Instinct Shaggy memes.

Interesting rumors have surfaced online regarding an unannounced project from Warner Bros. Interactive. According to them, the publisher is preparing a game titled Multiversus. It's supposed to be a platform fighting game in the vein of Super Smash Bros., featuring characters from WB's most popular brands.

Among the warriors there would be such celebrities as Batman, Gandalf from Lord of the RingsMax from Mad Max, Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, Tom and Jerry, Johnny Bravo and Fred Flintstone. These reports first appeared on Reddit's GamingLeaksAndRumours forum. Their source was a newly created account that provided no evidence of being closely associated with Warner Bros. Interactive.

According to the post on Reddit, the game is supposedly being developed at NetherRealms, the studio known for Mortal Kombat and Injustice. Usually very well informed journalist Jeff Grubb from Venture Beat confirmed that Multiverse is in production, but it's being developed by a different team. WB recently registered the title as a trademark, so something is definitely up.

An interesting point is that the roots of the project are supposed to go back to a series of memes "about Shaggy", in which this character easily defeated the strongest heroes of other brands. There's even an online petition (with 381,000 signatures no less) to encourage Warner Bros. to add Scooby-Doo's companion to the roster of playable fighters in Mortal Kombat 11.

The company clearly liked these memes. In the animated film Mortal Kombat Legends: Battle of the Realms, Shaggy briefly appeared in a section with the label's logo, taking down Scorpion in an instant. Warner Bros. was also said to have approved the idea of developing a game based on the concept.

That said, Ultra Instinct Shaggy, (as he's often called in memes in reference to Dragon Ball Super), would not fit in with Mortal Kombat. Therefore, it was decided to develop a completely new game, titled Multiversus, which would allow for the use of fighters from the company's different brands. What's interesting, initially the character roster was to include Harry Potter and Ron Weasley, but the work on these characters was stopped due to unspecified licensing problems.

Of course, until the official announcement, all these reports should be approached with caution. Currently, however, such mixing of different brands is very popular, an example of which are various crossovers regularly organized in Fortnite. Warner Bros. itself also does not shy away from such ideas, as we could see in this year's Space Jam: A New Legacy.
