PS5 With Record Sales Results in US Market

The PlayStation 5 is now the best-selling console in U.S. history if we consider the first five months since the device's debut.

IN A NUTSHELL:
  1. PlayStation 5 is the best-selling console in US history when we consider first 5 months after launch;
  2. In March, the leader was the Nintendo Switch.

In early April, we wrote about the record-breaking results achieved by PlayStation 5 in the UK. Today we found out the March sales of games and consoles in the US. PS5 became the best-selling console in the history of this market, when we take into account the first five months after launch. Sony's device achieved this result both when it comes to sales in dollars and volume. The data was revealed on the Twitter profile of Mata Piscatelli, who works at NPD Group analyrics company.

PS5 also leads in sales in dollars when we consider the first quarter of 2021. However, the most consoles sold during that period were sold by Nintendo, whose Switch took the lead in March in terms of both the number of units sold and their dollar value.

When we look at the entire gaming segment in March 2021 in the US, it see an 18% increase over last year, reaching a value of $5.6 billion. For the entire first quarter, gamers spent $14.9 billion, which is 30% more than in March 2020. The console segment grew by 47%, to $680 million. It's the best result since March 2008, which we can attribute to the presence of new consoles and the ongoing pandemic.

When it comes to game sales, the number one spot is taken by Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War, which overtook Monster Hunter: Rise and the debuting Outriders. The top ten (calculated by dollar value of sales) is as follows:

  1. Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold War
  2. Monster Hunter: Rise
  3. Outriders
  4. Super Mario 3D World
  5. Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  6. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
  7. Assassin's Creed: Valhalla
  8. Animal Crossing: New Horizons
  9. Super Mario 3D All-Stars
  10. Minecraft

Finally, an interesting fact - the DualSense controller was the best-selling accessory in both March and the entire first quarter of 2021. In this segment, gamers spent $300 million in March and $717 million since the beginning of the year.
