Hints

The contents of the book with hints depend on the type of tasks present in a given location. To unlock them, you have to perform two sequences that require you to align red dots on three different rings. You turn a ring by rolling your mouse over it, holding down the LMB and moving the mouse sideways, so as to make the red dots align. This has been shown in the above screenshot.

After you have completed two of the sequences, you get to see the contents of the book, which specifies the elements of the given location which you should focus on to push the story forward.

Sound collectibles

Often, while interacting with individual elements, you can obtain a sound memomry that you can then listen to in the menu. These are combinations of sounds that you can play by pressing the LMB on the symbol. After you do this, the symbol starts to spin and you hear the sound associated with the symbol. This type of collectibles is connected with obtaining Steam achievements.

Books

In a way, they explain the storyline to you. You find one of the books inside your character's house. After you collect it from the cupboard, you can read it by accessing it from the menu. To thumb through it, you have to click on the right-hand page to turn the page. If you want to read it several times, you must click on the left-hand page to turn to the previous page.
