Before the mission, you can choose a place to land - each location has different resources and different frequency of threats. You can choose pre-marked locations on the Mars' surface or choose your own spot of liking - the game offers you to enter a specific latitude under the "Custom" button. It's up to you where you want to land - how much you want to make it easier or more difficult for yourself.
