More ways to make money and a bribe system
It was already mentioned several times how big a role does the money play in the criminal underworld, but it also ties in with another subject – earning it. Surely, carrying out missions and theft are a standard, but maybe a different point of view is needed when trying to improve the game. Maybe gambling in the back of a restaurant that is just a front? Or perhaps collecting our due for a hit? As a gangster we have nearly limitless ways to gather funds illegally, but to do justice to the time period of the game, maybe more legal ways to make ends meet should be included? Cover ups for shady business were a common practice, and it’s about time they appeared in the series. Setting up our own bar or a clothing store doesn’t seem fun, but it could be a nice way to make ‘clean’ money.
Talking about ethics and finances, it’s worth to mention a bribe system. A simpler version was seen in the second game, but the concept itself is in a dire need of expanding upon. It’s a gangster game, is it not? Apart from that, Mafia is set in an era were bribing the officers of the law was done in broad daylight! Instead of a set amount, we should be able to freely adjust the money spent – failing to properly handle a sufficient sum could end up in a pursuit. The amount spent on making the law ‘look the other way’ in case of a committed crime should vary – making a theft ignored shouldn’t cost as much as getting away with murder.
