Weapon upgrades, modification, and a license system
The golden age of crime organizations might not have been the time of eccentric weapon modifications, but allowing us to enhance our arms a bit wouldn’t be that atypical of the era. Putting a suppressor on our favorite Colt, our a larger magazine for a Thompson could play a larger part in the success of a mission than it seems. Instead of searching for the right tool for a silent assassination, we could simply modify the gun we are carrying and use it to take revenge on the enemy of the family. A good solution could be to automatically assign a certain weapon to our character every mission, however taking into account (we hope) the more open nature of the game, that wouldn’t work.
An interesting addition would be a license system for guns. The Czech-based studio has experimented in this field with Mafia II, however it wasn’t included in the final game. In one of the video materials from Gamescom 2009, Vito was able to stroll down the street with a rifle in hand, even when the cops were nearby. Nevertheless, with a gun in the open, the officers would react by ordering to show a license – for which we could reply with presenting the papers, or resorting to a more violent solution. The concept seemed fantastic, and really added realism to the game – let’s hope that this time around it will actually be implemented in the final product. It could be taken even further with including a licensing system for various weapons types, only for a particular gun or combine both, with an option to forge our license. After all, that’s what gangsters do, right?
