Doom 3: Retaliation is a mod for Doom III, created by Death_Chopper.
Description:
Doom 3: Retaliation is an extensive mod that uses elements from all the games in the Doom series to heavily improve the game's gameplay and graphics, while maintaining the industrial atmosphere for which the third installment of the series is known.
CHANGES
Gameplay:
Improvements for a better experience include the addition of an ammo counter to all weapons, enhancing ease of use. This includes weapons like the machinegun and chaingun that previously featured digital counters, and the napalm launcher which had no counter at all. Several levels have been repaired and made playable, including the communications level which had issues for others though it worked for the mod developer. The mod comes with a default field of view (FOV) of 90 degrees, although adjustments for a 120 FOV may cause weapons to appear cramped. Thanks to optimization efforts, the mod now requires less storage space and offers more features than earlier versions. However, it cannot be used with certain other mods or source ports due to specific dependencies.
Balance:
The weapons system has been overhauled to ensure each weapon has a distinct role, with changes made to balance their effectiveness against each other. For example, the pistol now fires more slowly but delivers higher damage with a small blast radius, and the shotgun's pellet spread has been adjusted to encourage closer combat.
Enemies have been adjusted to pose a greater threat by inflicting more damage, although their vulnerability to each other remains similar to previous updates, promoting infighting as a strategy. Some enemies have received health boosts or adjustments to their abilities for better balance. Boss characters have also been redesigned to offer more challenging encounters.
Visual changes:
Visual enhancements include more realistic NPC models to address the original game's less detailed representations. Weapon models and various textures have been updated for a more aesthetically pleasing look, with changes in lighting and skyboxes across different levels to create a more dynamic Mars environment, though not intended to be a precise representation of the planet.
Audio changes:
Audio modifications include a new firing sound for the pistol, designed to mimic the sound of a Desert Eagle, and more pronounced player footsteps. Changes to the main menu music and game's main theme aim to better match the mod's atmosphere, along with adjusted in-game music and new sound effects for certain enemies, like the unique death scream of the zsec."
Instructions:
Simply place the "Retaliation" file in your Doom 3 folder, head to the "mods" button in the main menu of the game and click on the red button that says: "Retaliation".
If you want more permanent and quicker access to the mod, you can set value in the properties tab of steam to "+set fs_game Retaliation", which will immediately load up the mod instead of loading up Vanilla Doom 3.
I have my config files set to my setup, but you can change your resolution to whatever you need by going into the "Doomconfig.cfg" file and changing the values that say "r_CustomHeight" and "r_CustomWidth".
Make sure to have "r_mode" set to the value of "-1" so you can comfortably play in the 16:9 aspect ratio full screen.
Also make sure to check the "Autoexec.cfg" file to change any values that you need to change, such as the FOV or the Aspect ratio ("1"= 16:9, "0"= 4:3)
If your screen is stuttery, or your game speed is sped up, go into the autoexec.cfg file and change the value that says "com_fixedTic" and change it to the values -1, 0, or 1 to see which suits you best.
If your monitor is showing different colors as shown from the screenshots, you can either use the reshade preset i put in the file, or you can use reshade yourself to calibrate it to look the best it can. Mars lighting should look like a deep red in the daylight skybox, a dark blue in the sunset skybox, and a dark night with low illumination with the night skybox.
