Doom 3 for PC and XBX is a science fiction first-person shooter and the third major installment of the legendary series that set new standards for its genre in the mid-90s. It was developed by id Software, headed by John and Adrian Carmack. The development team lacked one creator of the original, though, namely, John Romero who left his colleagues due to disagreements shortly after Quake’s release and established his own, equally meritorious studio, Ion Storm. The third Doom was released for PC/Mac as well as Xbox.

Plot

Plot-wise, Doom 3 tells a similar story to the 1993’s original, although it was quite significantly expanded. It was co-written by Matthew Costello, the man behind The 7th Guest and 11th Hour’s plot. The action takes place in 2145 on Mars, in a large research facility of the UAC (Union Aerospace Corporation). The company initially dealt solely with exploration of the space and biotechnology development, but once it discovered remains of an advanced alien civilization, it broadened its activities with archeology.

Doom Game Series

FPS series being one of the precursors of the first-person shooter genre. The series was created by id Software studio and has, so to speak, three "fathers" - John Carmack, John Romero and Tom Hall. However, over the years, developers such as Midway Games and Nerve Software have also been involved in its development. Although the series made its debut on PC, over time it was also released on consoles, as well as on mobile devices.

Action

An official expansion pack for Doom 3. It was developed by Nerve Software, under the auspices of the base game's creators. Resurrection of Evil continues the storyline established in the core game, once again taking the player to the secret research facility on Mars. It turns out that defeating the powerful Cyberdemon and destroying the portal leading to hell were not the only problems of the Union Aerospace Corporation. Assuming the role of a nameless commando, the player's task is to eliminate the main culprit by the name of Malcolm Betruger, while slaying hordes of monstrous, demonic creatures along the way. Apart from the new storyline and a set of completely new levels, the expansion offers several new types of enemies, two weapons (the classic double-barreled shotgun and the futuristic Plasma Levitator), as well as a powerful artifact allowing the player to slow down the passage of time. Additionally, Resurrection of Evil features four new maps for the multiplayer mode. Up to eight players can meet in a multiplayer session.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Horror Elements: Many users praised the game's ability to create a tense and frightening atmosphere, particularly through its lighting and sound design. The horror aspect, with the use of limited visibility and the flashlight mechanic, was highlighted as a significant strength, contributing to the game's tension.
  • Graphics and Sound Design: The graphics, although from 2004, were considered cutting-edge at the time and have aged well. Users appreciated the visual and audio elements that enhanced the overall experience.
  • Weapon Variety: While opinions on specific weapons varied, many players found the gunplay enjoyable, especially with powerful weapons like the plasma rifle and BFG-9000. The shotgun, despite mixed reviews, was still seen as fun to use by some players.
  • Narrative Depth: Some players appreciated the more fleshed-out narrative compared to earlier titles in the series, finding the story and world-building intriguing, even if they felt it could have been executed better.

The main cons of the game

  • Pacing Issues: A common criticism was the game's slow pacing, particularly in the beginning. Many players felt that the game dragged on too long without significant evolution in gameplay or level design, leading to fatigue by the end.
  • Weapon Balance: The shotgun received a lot of negative feedback, with many users expressing frustration over its inconsistent damage output. Some felt that it was underpowered compared to its role in previous DOOM games.
  • Repetitive Gameplay: Some reviews mentioned the use of "monster closets" and repetitive enemy encounters, which detracted from the overall experience and made the gameplay feel stale at times.
  • Narrative Weakness: While some enjoyed the story, others found it lacking in substance, with flat character development and a narrative that felt lethargic.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Faster Pace and Action: Many players missed the fast-paced, adrenaline-fueled action typical of earlier DOOM games. The slower, horror-oriented approach was seen as a departure that didn't resonate with all fans.
  • More Dynamic Level Design: Some users expressed a desire for more varied and engaging level design, arguing that many areas felt too similar and cramped, leading to frustration during combat.
  • Improved Enemy Mechanics: There were calls for better enemy AI and attack patterns, as some found certain enemy behaviors to be unfair or frustrating, particularly when they would ambush players unexpectedly.
  • Depth in Narrative: While the narrative was acknowledged, many users felt it could have benefited from more character development and engaging storytelling elements to match the atmospheric tone of the game.

Summary

  • Overall, DOOM 3 is viewed as a unique entry in the franchise that has its share of dedicated fans, but also significant criticism regarding its pacing, gameplay mechanics, and narrative execution.
