Analysis of The Witcher Series Trailer - Another Netflix Hit?

Finally! We have seen the first trailer of The Witcher series by Netflix. We invite you to read our detailed analysis of this two-minute teaser trailer.

How old is Geralt? Witcher’s age being investigated

During the panel at Comic Con we heard a few words about Geralt's age. Henry Cavill said the White Wolf has 100 years old. Actually, that's how some fans estimated him – that's how he's described in his “ID” in the oldest Witcher's paper RPG (The Witcher: A Game of Imagination) or in video games by CD Projekt RED.

What does Andrzej Sapkowski have to say about it? The creator of The Witcher universe, in one of the interviews, said that Geralt in Baptism of Fire, is about 50 years old. This would mean that when we meet him, he's in his forties, because the action of the first story begins before Cirilla's birthday, and she’s over 12 years old when Cintra gets destroyed by Nilfgaard.

Roach as a main character?

During The Witcher Netflix panel at Comic Con, a lot of time was devoted to... The Roach. Henry Cavill said that Geralt couldn’t survive without his horse – she is a close companion of The Witcher, even a sort of therapist. This last statement is just a joke. But how does it relate to books? It looks pretty pale – Roach plays a purely utilitarian role in short stories. Geralt talks with her in A Grain of Truth, and even there it is difficult to consider it meaningful. What is most important – our beloved Witcher changes horses, but he calls every mount the same way. So there is no single Roach. But a whole pack (of Roaches?).

Throne Room. We may see Cintra's emblem.

What or who was missing in the trailer

As you can see, Netflix contained a lot of content in a short trailer – but certainly not enough to satisfy all appetites. First of all, we would like to have proof that Lauren S. Hissrich did not strip the source material of lightness and humor in favor of insipid, pompous drama. Fortunately, CD Projekt Red set good standards in this matter. The same applies to the Slavic setting, but this feature seems to slowly fade away after each scene presented in the trailer.

Apart from that, Jaskier (also known as Dandelion in some adaptations) is absent – this is a very important comic relief character and requires a lot of acting skill to play. I wish we could see other races, especially elves and dwarves. And the golden dragon, will it be any better than Smaug in The Hobbit? If not the dragon, maybe there would be a Gwent game somewhere? You know, since the series creators already have a lot in common with video games.

Polish accent

In the picture above you can see the only Polish accent of the trailer. In the background you can notice a Polish actor – Maciej Musial, who plays Sir Lazlo in the series. Until now we had no idea who he is going to play, but now we are sure he is a knight from Cintra. Maybe even a personal bodyguard of Ciri? We'll see about that.

A magnificent adventure begins?

And that's it. There will be no wider summary, because in fact we still know little about this series. Yes, you can already form an opinion about the individual elements, but it is definitely too early to predict the whole success or a flop. Privately, I'm skeptical about what I've seen – but I'm still waiting for more content. Leave a comment and let us know what do you think about the upcoming The Witcher Netflix series.
