Netflix US Release Schedule – Q1 2019
Grab some popcorn and make sure to chill (...out) as the list of goodies coming to Netflix this quarter is about to get unraveled.
As we’re a month and a half into the first quarter of 2019, we can already enjoy some of the new treats on Netflix. Before we move on to the releases planned for the next few weeks, let's check if there’s anything worth catching up with.
A quick disclaimer before we begin – these lists are not rankings; our propositions were selected according to how interesting they seem – for various reasons – rather than how good they are.
Selected Premieres – Series:
- A Series of Unfortunate Events, (Season 3) – Netflix Original Series;
- Sex Education – Netflix Original Series;
- COMEDIANS of the world, (Season 1) – Netflix Original Series;
- Z Nation, (Season 5);
- Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes, Netflix Original Series.
What’s Z Nation doing up there? Chances are that those of you, who follow Netflix premieres on a monthly basis, are already familiar with some of the remaining titles, perhaps even all of them – I‘m not so sure about Z Nation.
The series is not a member of the Netflix Originals family, however, it was through Netflix that I learned about this little gem. And before some of you begin shouting out in the comment section that it’s a “piece of useless crap” rather than a gem, allow me to explain.
Yes, even though Z Nation is a series about a zombie apocalypse, it shares neither the formula nor the budget of the more "serious" zombie series, such as The Walking Dead. At first glance, this show might look like a waste of time. Caricature characters, a plot full of clichés, seriously abstract ideas that lack any credibility, and, occasionally, ridiculous special effects… This is exactly why I love this show. It’s a great alternative to the older, more exploited series, which also lets you stay within the zombie theme. And by the way – if we cared so much about realism or credibility, we wouldn’t be watching any zombie movies to begin with.
Upcoming Netflix Original movies and stand-ups:
- IO – Netflix Original Movie
- Polar – Netflix Original Movie
- Medici: The Magnificent – Netflix Original Movie
- Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias: One Show Fits All – Netflix Original Stand-up
- GODZILLA The Planet Eater – Netflix Original
GODZILLA The Planet Eater is the third and the last entry in the anime trilogy that’s part of the GODZILLA universe. After its successful premiere in Japanese theatres at the end of 2018, it is now available worldwide on Netflix.
Critics agree that this is the best part of the entire trilogy; a nice blend of good, old kaiju action and more serious dilemmas faced by the well-written characters.
So if you consider yourself a fan of enormous monsters breaking big things, make sure to check this one out (of course, watching the previous two parts is also strongly recommended).
When it comes to classics, Netflix’ offer has been expanded by many movies considered a must-watch. Below, there are six (or ten – if you count all parts of Indiana Jones) propositions you might want to revisit. If you haven’t seen any of these, amend that asap!
Classic Movies:
- Indiana Jones (all parts)
- Mr. Bean’s Holiday (2007)
- Pan’s Labyrinth (2006)
- Pulp Fiction (1994)
- The Addams Family (1991)
- Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)
So... What lies ahead?
Days are getting longer, but the weather doesn’t really encourage going outside yet (at least not in my part of the planet), so it’s still a good time to spend the evening in front of a TV without feeling particularly guilty about it.

Our choice(s)?
I don’t want to start this paragraph with something along the lines of "if you enjoy Game of Thrones, you have to watch..." – even though Nightflyers is based on a novel by George R.R. Martin, such a statement would be misleading. Sure, if you enjoy Martin’s writing, you should go ahead and find out how the adaptation worked out this time. Do not expect this show to have anything to do with HBO's Game of Thrones, though. Nonetheless, if you’re keen on sci-fi, Nightflyers is something you might want to try.
To some, February is all about love. Netflix addresses the global Valentine's Day issue with the release of Dating Around – a reality show, where people participate in five dates, which are then pieced together so that it seems like five dates playing out simultaneously. The show does not have a plot per se, but the form is quite refreshing, and cheering for your favorite date can be fun. If nothing else, you may at least appreciate your own relationships more after watching the show and seeing what some people have to go through.
Let's move on to what Netflix will have to offer in March (all the non-Netflix productions will be announced in the near future, so stay tuned!).
March 1 | |
The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind | NETFLIX FILM |
March 8 | |
Juanita | NETFLIX FILM |
March 13 | |

March 15 | |

Quite recently, I was re-watching The Wire, and then The Office series. Apart from Michael Scott's study of being wired, do you know what else connects these two? It’s the fact, that they both featured Idris Elba – same as Turn Up Charlie. As announced by Netflix, the new comedy series starring Elba will debut on March 15. The 8-part series portrays Elba as a struggling DJ who wants to take his last shot at a successful career when he is unexpectedly asked to look after his (successful) friend’s daughter. Interested, but not hyped, you could say. Since the series was just announced, we can only speculate as to what type of character will Elba deliver with his performance.
I admit my heart skipped a beat when I learned about The Dirt. It was easy to predict that other biographical productions about musicians and bands will start pouring in after the overwhelming success of Bohemian Rhapsody. This time around it is about none other than Mötley Crüe! The band members will be portrayed by Daniel Webber, Iwan Rheon, Douglas Booth, and Colson Baker (aka Machine Gun Kelly). I can’t wait to see their own take on such an iconic band like Mötley Crüe.
Have you found anything interesting or special on the list? Is there anything you beg to differ about? Make sure to let us know in the comments and see you next time we update you about the upcoming Netflix releases.
