Aegis Defenders, available on PC, SWITCH and PS4, is an original genre hybrid that uses elements of metroidvania and tower defense games. The game, developed by GUTS Department studio, was created thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign and was released by Humble Bundle.
Aegis Defenders is set in a fantasy world where the only things left by technologically advanced civilizations are only ruins and powerful artifacts that grant their owners tremendous power. Citizens of Elam, a city that was built on these lands, suffer from regime of the ruthless Empire. The main heroes of this story, a mechanic called Bart and his granddaughter Clu, embark on a journey to find a legendary weapon called Aegis. They believe that this weapon can end the Empire once and for all and change fate of the people that are under its rules.
The action in Aegis Defenders, released on PC, SWITCH and PS4, is presented from a side view. During the game we visit various locations, jump from platform to platform, avoid traps and other dangers. Also, we have to solve a few easy puzzles but there are also those that are more demanding. The puzzles are solved by cooperation of the main characters and sometimes we are even aided by their companions. We can switch between the characters whenever we want which is helpful during the puzzles and fights with enemies.
The usual fights with enemies aren't that different from those that appear in other metroidvania-like games. However, when we have to defeat waves of enemies that attack us from all directions and defend certain places, characters and objects, we must to rely on tower defense element – if we want to achieve success we need to use Bart's and Clu's special abilities. Bart can, in a blink of an eye, create useful items such as automatic turrets and other obstacles. Clu is good with weapons but she can also set traps.
During the game we collect new equipment and we can upgrade the already owned items, which allows our characters to reach previously unavailable places and face bigger, and more dangerous enemies.
The core of Aegis Defenders is its story mode – the game can be completed alone or with other player that can join us at any point.
The graphics in Aegis Defenders, available on PC, SWITCH and PS4, is 2D and it uses the pixelart style – the developers were inspired by games such as Super Metroid, early The Legend of Zelda and Final Fantasy games.
