Aer is an unusual action adventure game released on PS4, PC and XONE. The player assumes the role of a shapeshifting girl and he travels through an intriguing, surrealistic world in search for memories and pieces of an ancient prophecy. The title was developed by an independent Swedish studio Forgotten Key, founded in 2011 by four students from Karlshamn.
In the game the player assumes the role of a girl named Auk, who – similarly to many other members of her tribe – is able to transform into a bird. Her task is to help her kin by gathering resources and discovering ancient technologies. As the game progresses, Auk discovers new pieces of an ancient prophecy that warns about the incoming end of the world. She discovers what her role in the story is.
The gameplay mechanics of Aer for PS4, PC and XONE are similar to mechanics of games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and the Journey from PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4. The action is presented with a third-person perspective and the key aspect of the game lies in exploration. The player will spend much time both by running on the surface and by flying in the air as a bird. These skills enable the protagonist to explore remote areas of a world consisting of floating islands. During the game player encounters other shapeshifters and he discovers ruins of ancient civilization – all of that while facing various dark monsters.
The graphics of the game are worth mentioning. Although they lack details, they present artistic, surrealistic style and pastel colors.
