The Night of the Rabbit

A German company founded in 2007. Daedalic Entertainment, known for adventure games, produced the Edna & Harvey, The Whispered World, and Deponia series. In 2023, the company turned to publishing games by other developers. Daedalic Entertainment has been part of Nacon’s portfolio since 2022.

History

From a developer...

Daedalic Entertainment was founded on March 1st, 2007, by Carsten Fichtelmann and Jan Müller-Michaelis, marking the start of its journey in the gaming industry. The studio wasted no time in launching its initial projects. By carving out a niche in adventure games, the team delivered numerous successful titles enjoyed by fans worldwide.

The studio launched Edna & Harvey: The Breakout in 2008, with the sequel Edna & Harvey: Harvey's New Eyes following three years later. The Whispered World debuted in 2009, but fans had to wait a full seven years for its follow-up. In 2012, Deponia debuted, starting a series that continued to develop in subsequent years.

Venturing beyond adventure games, Daedalic released the RPG Blackguards in 2014. That year also saw Bastei Lübbe take a majority ownership of the studio. Daedalic soon expanded with a Düsseldorf office, and by February 2018, a third branch had opened in Munich.

By 2017, the studio’s streak of success in game development was starting to burn out. Declining enthusiasm for adventure games meant that Ken Follett's The Pillars of the Earth (2017) and State of Mind (2018) failed to achieve the expected commercial success. A Year of Rain, an RTS launched in March 2020, did not achieve commercial success either. In early 2021, Daedalic shut down its Düsseldorf and Munich offices - the latter having been effectively dormant since late 2020 - and in April 2022, it formally joined Nacon’s portfolio.

The studio’s new project was announced in March 2019. This time, Daedalic tried its hand at a completely new genre, creating the action-adventure title The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, licensed from the iconic franchise. After multiple delays, the title hit the market in May 2023 - and ended up a massive failure, both financially and artistically. Steam users gave the game “mostly negative” reviews, with Metacritic scores from critics ranging from 34 to 49/100 depending on the platform.

...to full-time publisher

Daedalic Entertainment began paving the way for a company-wide transformation. This shift was evident in the fact that development of Surviving Deponia was handed over to an external studio, Atomic Torch Studios. Daedalic Entertainment confirmed in June 2023 that it would step away from video game development and dedicate itself entirely to publishing. Daedalic’s publishing catalog includes such games as Glitchpunk, Inkulinati, and Hidden Deep.
