The Afterlove EP is a production on the border of adventure and rhythm games, with some additional visual novel elements. The project was backed by the independent Indonesian studio Pikselnesia, founded by Mohammad Fahmi, who previously worked on such works as Coffee Talk or What Comes After. Even though Fahmi passed away in 2022, the team committed to completing his last project.

Story

Afterlove EP takes us to contemporary Jakarta - the capital of Indonesia. The main character of the game is Rama, a young musician who has been unable to recover from the death of his beloved Cinta for a year. A month before his band's important concert, the protagonist faces a choice - either he will try to pull himself together and help the group record new songs, or his friends will go on tour without him. The matter is complicated by the fact that his mental health is apparently starting to falter, and he himself does not know whether the source of Cinta's voice, which he hears in his head, is a ghost or his own imagination.

RPG Fan: 74 / 100 by Paul Skevington

By Afterlove EP’s closing moments, I was happy to take the needle from the vinyl and put the record back in its sleeve. I will file it away in the collection, an imperfect album, with some standout tracks that make the filler worthwhile.

FingerGuns: 6 / 10 by Toby Andersen

Afterlove EP is a poignant and heartfelt visual novel that explores some intense stuff about grief, wrapped up in the conceit of still talking to those who have passed on. However the lack of control, choice and gameplay options left me wanting to process my grief elsewhere.

  • Art and Music: The hand-drawn art style and the soundtrack, particularly the music by the Jakarta-based band L'Alphalpha, received widespread praise for enhancing the game's atmosphere and emotional impact.
  • Character Depth: Players appreciated the well-written characters and their complex relationships, particularly the protagonist Rama and his interactions with Cinta and other characters. The portrayal of grief and therapy was noted as realistic and relatable.
  • Multiple Endings and Replayability: The game features various branching paths and endings, encouraging players to explore different character routes and decisions, which adds to its replay value.

The main cons of the game

  • Cinta's Characterization: Many players found Cinta, the protagonist's deceased girlfriend, to be unlikable or annoying, which detracted from their emotional connection to the story. Her presence as a voice in Rama's head was often cited as frustrating.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The rhythm game elements were criticized for being too easy or poorly executed, with some players finding the timing off and the mechanics not engaging enough. Additionally, the calendar system and the limited choices for daily activities were seen as restrictive.
  • Pacing Issues: Several reviews mentioned that the pacing of the story could be slow or dragged out, particularly during certain cutscenes or memory sequences, which affected overall engagement.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Meaningful Choices: Some players felt that their choices didn't significantly impact the story, leading to a sense of linearity despite the branching paths. They expressed a desire for clearer indicators of how decisions affect outcomes.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions included better skip functions for dialogue and cutscenes, more intuitive navigation, and additional save slots to enhance the user experience.
  • Localization and Voice Acting: A few users mentioned the absence of an Indonesian voiceover for characters other than Cinta, which could have added authenticity. They also suggested that more natural dialogue could improve immersion.

Summary

  • Overall, Afterlove EP is celebrated for its heartfelt narrative and artistic presentation, but it faces criticism for certain gameplay mechanics and character portrayals that may not resonate with all players.
