Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express is an adventure game based on Agatha Christie's best-selling novel, Murder on the Orient Express. It was developed by Microids, also responsible for the Syberia series of the same genre.

Plot

Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express is set on the titular train, its main protagonist being Hercule Poirot, legendary detective. He's tasked with solving a crime committed against one of the passengers. Unlike the original book, the game was modernised and set in 2023.

The detective's task is not an easy one, as each passenger hides their own secrets, many having a motive. One of the passengers is Joanna Locke, the second playable character; we play as her during flashbacks taking place outside the Orient Express.

The main cons of the game

  • Pacing Issues: Many reviews mention that the game drags, especially in the midsection, with repetitive walking back and forth on the train and lengthy dialogue that can become tedious.
  • Simplistic Puzzles: Some users feel that many puzzles lack challenge and depth, making them feel more like busywork than engaging detective work.

  • Fast Travel Option: Players express a desire for a fast travel feature to reduce the time spent walking back and forth on the train.
  • More Complex Decision-Making: Users wished for more opportunities to make impactful decisions that could lead to different outcomes, rather than a linear progression where mistakes are easily corrected.
  • Enhanced Puzzle Difficulty: Many players desire more challenging and thought-provoking puzzles that would better engage their deductive skills.
  • Skip Dialogue Option: The inability to skip dialogue or cutscenes was a common complaint, as it contributes to the feeling of the game dragging on unnecessarily.

Conclusion

  • In conclusion, while *Agatha Christie - Murder on the Orient Express* has been well-received for its storytelling and engaging gameplay mechanics, it also faces criticism for pacing, puzzle complexity, and technical execution. Users express a desire for improvements that could enhance the overall experience and make the game more enjoyable for a wider audience.
