The French Revolution is one of the bloodiest chapters in the country's history. Developers from the independent American studio Joy Manufacturing decided to let us see if, if we found ourselves in ?early Paris, we would be able to survive the turmoil that prevailed there. The fruit of this idea was a visual novel-type production with clearly outlined elements of a dating simulator, entitled Ambition: A Minuet in Power.
The action of Ambition: A Minuet in Power begins on March 19, 1789. During the gameplay, we play the role of a woman whose overriding goal is to survive the approaching chaos. There are many dr?gs leading to the goal, although it must be remembered that the second many paths can lead us astray. This makes skillful manoeuvring between politics, conspiracies and romance the key to success.
We carry out our intentions, first of all, by dating representatives of different social strata. In addition, here we engage in activities and make choices of much greater importance than who we enlist. This is because they affect both our own fate and the course of the entire revolution. We can even change the course of history.
As a lady in demand, we can look for our other half among such characters as Baron Armand de Marbo, artist Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun, priest Ludovico Sidotti, corporal Thomas-Alexandre Dumas, rich widow Honorade Gazel or, last but not least, passionate revolutionary Louis-Antoine de Saint Just.
At the same time, the game does not force us to be loyal to only one character. On the other hand, time, which serves here as a key and at the same time limited resource, works to our disadvantage. The rhythm of the game is determined by the events that occupy a place in the calendar. We are talking about both lavish parties and intimate, secret meetings.
Many of the choices we make carry consequences. Depending on whom we romance and which side of the revolutionary dispute we take, we can either ensure our survival or, on the contrary, end up under the guillotine. The title also allows us to act on two fronts and sell the secrets we learn. However, if we do not take care of our credibility, in this way we can also make more enemies than allies (and that is in the best case).
On the other hand, opponents do not pr?sent and wait for our next move. This results in the fact that not all events that take place here are the effects of our actions, and that not all of them are under our influence at all.
The graphic design of the game Ambition: A Minuet in Power is kept in a cartoonish style. The gameplay takes place to the accompaniment of a soundtrack inspired by period music, signed by John Robert Matz.
