Arms Trade Tycoon: Tanks is a simulation strategy game that allows us to design our own tanks and sell them to various customers. The game can be tested as a free demo, and it was developed by FunGi studio.

Mechanics

We start by choosing one of the available countries, where our factory will be located - we got among others Great Britain, Germany or France. We receive a small initial budget and all the buildings needed to run the company. As we develop our business, we improve our statistics, such as recognition, number of employees, developed technologies, etc., which increases our chances of winning more contracts.

There are several types of buildings in the game. The first contains a research room. By clicking on the appropriate board, we can choose which technology our employees will deal with. It has been divided into three development trees: firepower, mobility and construction. Developing each of these allows you to use better parts when building a tank.

The main cons of the game

  • Business Practices: Users express frustration over the developers' decision to lock major updates behind a Patreon subscription, feeling it unfairly limits access to content for those who have already purchased the game.
  • Shallow Mechanics: Many reviews highlight that the research and design systems are overly simplistic, lacking the depth and complexity expected from a tycoon game. Players often feel restricted to historical designs without room for creativity.
  • Balancing Issues: The difficulty spikes significantly between game stages, leading to frustrating experiences where players feel they cannot progress without specific designs or technologies.
  • User Interface and Quality of Life Issues: Frequent loading screens when switching between screens and a cluttered interface make navigation cumbersome. Players also mention a lack of meaningful feedback on tank performance.

  • Expanded Customization: Players desire more freedom in tank design, including the ability to create experimental or alternate-history tanks rather than being forced to stick to historical models.
  • Improved Research Mechanics: Users want a more nuanced research system that allows for multiple branches and incremental upgrades rather than linear progression.
  • Enhanced Contracts System: Many reviews suggest that the contract system needs to be more dynamic, allowing for a wider variety of contracts and less reliance on specific tank designs.
  • Better Feedback Systems: Players would like clearer indicators of why their tanks succeed or fail in battles to help them improve their designs.
  • More Nations and Eras: There is a strong desire for the inclusion of more playable nations and the ability to progress through additional historical eras beyond the current offerings.

Summary

  • Overall, while "Arms Trade Tycoon: Tanks" has captivated a niche audience with its engaging concept and potential for depth, it grapples with fundamental issues related to gameplay mechanics, balance, and user experience that need addressing as it moves through early access.
