Asterbreed is an arcade shooter in which we control a powerful mecha. With several different attacks, we break through the battlefield and annihilate hordes of enemies. The game combines the characteristics of classic shooters and shoot'em up titles.
Astebreed is an arcade action game combining elements typical for shoot 'em up games and classic three-dimensional shooters. Guided by a powerful mecca, players face hordes of enemies, but they observe the fights from different perspectives - it can be a TPP view, sometimes 2D, and at certain moments even an isometric projection. The game described herein was developed by Edelweiss studio.
The player assumes the role of Roy Becket, a young pilot who dreams of matching the skills of his legendary father. He receives the chance to prove his value much faster than expected. His galaxy was invaded by a race of aggressive mosses that destroy everything on their way. The army, to which Roy belongs, manages to capture one of the special machines and convert them to serve humanity. However, it requires someone to sit at its helm - the task falls on the shoulders of the hero. On his adventure, he is aided by a young girl.
During the fight one can use three types of attacks: direct attacks with the sword, ranged attacks, and self-levelling attacks. Their efficient use and quick orientation in what is happening on the screen is the key to success. However, the fact that from time to time the player's perspective keeps changing hinders the task.
Astebreed features impressive visuals. Although the models themselves are not particularly complex, the number of colors and molecular effects that occur during combat add to the game's atmosphere and unquestionable charm.

Luckily, the added difficulty modes and competing for the best score on the leaderboards adds some replay value, but some might consider the $19.99 asking price a bit steep for what's on offer. For others like me, this is a little slice of bullet heaven that the PS4 has been long awaiting.

Edelweiss is to be applauded for applying modern day game design to a genus long in need of a 21st century lick, and while it might not totally rejuvenate an interest in bullet hell shooters, it would be foolish for fans of the genre to ignore a game as polished and slick as Astebreed. Granted, there's a limited audience for this type of game, and it's definitely not for the casuals, but any gamer nostalgic for the time when skill played a major factor in progression should find this a worthy challenge.
