Atomic Heart is a shooter developed by Russian studio Mundfish. The game, long before its release labeled as "Soviet BioShock", was published by Focus Entertainment.

Plot

Atomic Heart takes place in an alternate history. In the 1940s, the Soviet Union revolutionized the field of robotics thanks to the discoveries of Dimitri Sechenov. As part of the Facility 3826 project, he led the construction of machines connected to a neural network, Kollektiv 1.0, which were not only able to replace humans at many of their jobs, but also significantly accelerated city expansion and improved the citizens' living conditions. Sechenov then proceeded to work on an interface known as Thought, supposed to let humans connect to the Kollektiv network - the official reason being to let them control the robots with their minds and provide them with immediate access to information.

Releasing Atomic Heart on Anniversary of Russian Invasion of Ukraine is Wrong

Is the release of a Russian-made game almost exactly on the anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine a good idea? Hardly. Even considering that the date was probably chosen by the Western publisher, it comes across as a bad joke. But there is still a way to get this situation straight.

Tom's Guide: 3.5 / 5 by Brittany Vincent

Atomic Heart wants to be BioShock, but the tone of its narrative rubber-bands in quality. It's hard to tell which parts are poorly written, and which are intentionally comedic. By contrast, the environmental and character designs are excellent, which makes it worth pushing through the rougher sections. Atomic Heart is a spectacle, and it's got more highs than lows.

GameSpot: 6 / 10 by Jordan Ramée

Atomic Heart lacks follow-through on its most interesting narrative concepts and plays it safe with its first-person shooter gameplay.

Full Review

TheSixthAxis: 7 / 10 by Gareth Chadwick

Atomic Heart is a bit of a surprise. It's not perfect and the open world is an unneeded dilution, but when you're in the story missions it's always entertaining, despite occasionally dragging things out a little. It can be a bit strange, but it's the self aware kind of strange that can be a bit charming. And the robots are pretty great.
