An FPP adventure game, prepared as a psychological horror and inspired by the titular creepypasta. We observe the world through a bodycam, trying to escape from a maze of rooms and avoid monsters. The game can be played alone or in online coop with voice chat.
Backrooms is an adventure game set in the style of a psychological horror. The game draws heavily from a famous creepypasta, a thriller story spread on the Internet, known as The Backroom. It was developed by the independent team Found Footage Studios.
In Backrooms, we play the role of one of the characters who end up in the titular location. We are talking about a seemingly endless maze consisting of empty rooms with walls lined with characteristic wallpaper. Although the appearance of this place is already disturbing, matters are further complicated by the fact that sinister forces lurk here in the form of monsters hunting us. All of this makes our primary goal to find a way to escape.
In Backrooms we watch the action from a first-person perspective (FPP). Unlike most other productions of this type, we're not seeing the world through the character's eyes. Instead this is the footage from the so-called "bodycam" - a camera attached to the character's body. Apart from the titular rooms, the adventure takes us to other equally terrifying places, such as a gloomy forest, an abandoned homestead, underground tunnels, workshops, and even more imaginative locations.
While traversing the locations we solve various puzzles and we must constantly be on guard, because dangerous creatures are lurking in the area. Since we cannot fight them, we must act quietly, and when we are noticed - try to hide or run away.
Backrooms allows to play alone, but it spreads its wings in a cooperative multiplayer mode over the Internet.
The game implements proximity voice chat, so the distance between individual game participants affects how well they hear each other. It should be remembered that when we speak, we are heard not only by other players, but also by the creatures searching for us. Therefore, when possible, it is worth communicating by whispering.
In addition, there is a level editor that allows us to create our own stages and share them with the community.
Backrooms uses a special filter that makes the game look like a VHS tape, with characteristic distortions and "grain".
