An informal remaster of Age of Pirates II: City of Abandoned Ships, offered as an open-world RPG. In Caribbean Legend: Age of Pirates, we are transported to the 17th-century Caribbean, where we build our legendary status, taking on roles as pirates, privateers, traders, and treasure hunters.
In February 2024, the companies BlackMark Studio and Valkyrie Initiative delivered the game Caribbean Legend, an unofficial refresh of Sea Dogs: To Each His Own. Their next project, created in collaboration with the ReCon Team, is Caribbean Legend: Age of Pirates. We are dealing with another unofficial remaster, this time of the game Age of Pirates II: City of Abandoned Ships. In both cases, these are RPGs with a pirate theme.
In Caribbean Legend: Age of Pirates, the action is viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP). The game takes us to the 17th-century Caribbean and allows us to play as Peter Blood (or an alternative female character), who, after being accused of treason, was sold into slavery and then began his pirate career.
The game offers us an open world. We explore the waters aboard our ship, while smaller and larger pieces of land are visited on foot. During the game we meet the inhabitants of the Caribbean, complete quests that push the story forward, and also undertake procedurally generated missions and side missions.
The game allows us to both spread terror on the Caribbean Sea and obtain letters of marque to side with one of the powers fighting for control over this region. We can also take a somewhat calmer path, focusing on treasure hunting or trading.
Regardless of the choice we make, there is no shortage of opportunities to reach for weapons here. We fight opponents not only on land, using melee or ranged weapons from the era, but also on open waters, participating in dynamic naval battles. The key to success in the latter is skillful maneuvering of the ship. To conduct accurate firing while avoiding enemy projectiles, we must consider the wind direction and the range of our cannons. Once we immobilize the enemy ship, we can board it to deal with its crew.
As we progress, our combat potential begins to grow. The game features a character development system, accompanied by the unlocking of increasingly powerful ships. Over time, we can lead an entire fleet, making it possible to lay sieges and conquer entire colonies.
