An intriguing combination of a puzzle game with an adventure of light erotic colour. In production we play the role of a young man, who struggles with many social problems. At night, the daredevil also experiences real nightmares.
Catherine is an action adventure game developed by Atlus, a company with the popular Persona series.
In Catherine, the player plays Vincent, a 32-year-old guy with no illusions about his successes in love and professional career. For five years he has been in an unsuccessful relationship with his peers, Katherine, who, contrary to his expectations, wants to formalise their relationship as soon as possible. Unexpectedly, while sitting in his favourite pub, Vincent meets a mysterious Catherine, whom he invites to his apartment. The intoxicating moments turn out to be the beginning of the drama - every night he is haunted by nightmares, during which he escapes from terrible beasts. In the city it is rumoured that the minds of young men were captured by a demon that led to their death during sleep. Vincent, who tries to arrange his relations with Catherine and Katherine, tries to solve the riddle.
Catherine is an unusual adventure. The game was divided into three stages. In the first of them, the so-called Stray Sheep, the player stays in the pub, where he conducts conversations with various people. In the next one, Drama, he tries to maintain proper relations with the girls (Catherine and Katherine). In Nightmare mode, he controls Vincent, fighting for his life in action-packed sequences during which he overcomes complex arcade stages. By moving and eliminating various types of boxes, he avoids traps and giant demons, trying to tear him on a fork. In the struggle he is accompanied by other men trapped in nightmares (disguised as rams).
The plot has been constructed in such a way that the player's actions largely determine the further development of accidents. History is influenced not only by conversations with characters, including two women, but also by Vincent's attitude during his nightmares. Production provides about twenty hours of fun, which is further extended by the ability to unlock one of the many potential endings.
The graphic design of Catherine was made in cel-shading technique, which makes her think of Japanese animated series.

Game Ratings for Catherine Video Game.
Jump Dash Roll: 7 / 10 by Shaun McHugh
As a puzzler, Catherine Classic delivers in spades. As a narrative, I'm not a fan. I don't like the storytelling, or the characters, but I can't deny I had fun along the way.
GamingTrend: 85 / 100 by Patrick Rost
Catherine Classic is a port to PC of one of the more unique and surreal gaming experiences around. Scary, thought provoking, and beautiful to behold, Catherine combines horror, romance, puzzles and platforming into a must play experience for anyone. Highly repeatable and challenging gameplay defines this true classic cult hit that begs to be discovered and rediscovered despite outwardly obscuring its true nature behind the standard expectations of a game in this style.
Cubed3: 8 / 10 by Renan Fontes
Catherine Classic may not be the definitive way to experience Vincent's journey of self discovery, mainly due to some pesky technical issues, but it is a solid port nonetheless, with a few improvements of its own. Faster loading times, crisper visuals, and dual audio support, elevate the title from beyond just another bog standard PC port. It is unfortunate that English audio clips in when playing in Japanese, but Catherine is so thoughtfully designed, and so well-written that it's easy enough to endure the port's more disappointing qualities in favour of the incredible experience underneath. Catherine Classic is a great alternative to the PS3 original, if flawed.
