Refreshed version of the heat adopted metroidvanii from 2004. In addition to the new graphics and soundtrack, the title boasts three different levels of difficulty. However, the gameplay has remained unchanged, so the fun is still about exploring vast levels, jumping on platforms and fighting with smaller and larger supporters of the crazy Doctor.
Cave Story+ is a refreshed version of Cave Story - a warmly-received metroidvania game, which debuted in 2004 on PCs, to eventually see a release on Nintendo consoles.
As in the original, in Cave Story+ the player takes on the role of Quote, who wakes up with amnesia on a large flying island. The protagonist quickly finds a village inhabited by the so-called Mimigas - peaceful, rabbit-like creatures harassed by the mad Doctor, and our characters become the creatures' last hope. The hero embarks on a dangerous journey to confront the mad scientist and his henchmen.
The action in Cave Story+ is shown on the side. The gamplay revolves around crossing vast labyrinth-like levels, jumping on platforms and avoiding countless obstacles and traps, and combat. Among the adversaries there are both smaller ones, not too dangerous, as well as over twenty powerful bosses. In the clashes we use ten types of weapons, which can be further improved as we make progress. However, encounters with NPCs help us to find useful tips.
Cave Story+ stands out from the original mainly due to three different difficulty levels and six new game modes. The visuals have also been improved (although it is still possible to switch to their original version) and an interesting option has been implemented, thanks to which the visuals change depending on the prevailing period of the year (Halloween, Christmas). Moreover, a new soundtrack has been composed - apart from classic, chiptune's music, we can be accompanied by refreshed versions of well-known songs, as well as completely new sounds.

If you haven't played Cave Story yet, you need to; it's an essential title for any fan of Metroidvania style games. Its wonderful pacing, fantastic controls and charming visuals make it a must-have for fans of the genre, especially those that have yet to play it. If there was the equivalent of a required reading list for games, Cave Story+ would be on it.

Cave Story+ isn't the definitive version of Cave Story—I think that crown still belongs to the WiiWare version, but then again, that version isn't portable. I do miss the ability to switch graphical styles, but it's really the only regrettable absentee. The real takeaway here, though, is Cave Story is great and you should play it.

It’s a testament to what an incredible achievement Cave Story+ was, or is, that it still holds up so well, remaining to be an engaging and well-paced adventure from start to finish. I had never expected to fall head over heels for the game as much as I did, wrongly believing that perhaps it wasn’t really for me. But, now that the Mimigas have been saved, all is right the world once more.
