SavePoint Gaming: 7 / 10 by Jake Su

For what it's worth, Chains of Freedom is not a bad game at all. As a turn-based tactical adventure, it fulfils the brief sufficiently, with the sort of conflict and narrative that is simply par for the course. Being unable to offer anything genuinely new means that you really have to love the premise to see everything through, and at the end of the day, that's not for everyone.

The main pros of the game

  • Engaging Combat Mechanics: The turn-based combat system is well-received, with varied action points and tactical depth. Players appreciate the ability to craft unique builds using the biocrystal system, which allows for customization of characters and strategies.
  • Visual and Audio Presentation: The game features appealing graphics and sound design, including voice acting that, while mixed in quality, adds to the overall experience.
  • Challenging Gameplay: Many players find the game challenging, particularly in later stages, which enhances the satisfaction of overcoming difficult encounters.
  • Intriguing Setting and Story: The dystopian narrative, while sometimes predictable, offers engaging themes and plot twists that resonate with players. The game’s atmosphere is also praised for its immersive qualities.

The main cons of the game

  • Linear Gameplay: The game is criticized for its linear structure, with limited exploration and backtracking, leading to a lack of replayability. Players often feel constrained to a straightforward path without significant choices.
  • Resource Management Issues: Many reviews highlight frustration with the scarcity of resources, particularly ammunition, which can make encounters feel tedious and artificially difficult. The crafting system, while present, often does not alleviate these concerns adequately.
  • Turn Limit Mechanics: The turn limits on higher difficulties are seen as a significant drawback, leading to frustration when players encounter bad luck with missed shots or enemy reinforcements.
  • Character Development Limitations: The lack of traditional leveling systems and the permanent loss of character upgrades due to story events can lead to dissatisfaction, especially when players invest time in building specific characters only to lose them.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Expanded Character Progression: Users express a desire for more complex skill trees and character development options, rather than the limited biocrystal system.
  • Non-linear Exploration: Players wish for a more open-world design or at least a less linear experience that allows for meaningful exploration and decision-making.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions include better camera controls, a map system for navigation, the ability to quicksave, and more intuitive UI elements for managing biocrystals and crafting.
  • Additional Game Modes: Many users hope for a sandbox mode or additional content that would enhance replayability and provide more varied gameplay experiences.

Summary

  • Overall, "Chains of Freedom" has garnered a mix of positive and negative feedback, with a solid foundation in tactical gameplay but significant room for improvement in various aspects of design and player experience.
