Hollywood is a place commonly associated with fame and glamour. However, the creators of the game Confidential Killings, i.e. independent developers Brane and Lorenzo Boni, convince that under the cloak of wealth and lavish life of its inhabitants there are dark secrets.

Gameplay

In Confidential Killings, most of the time is spent watching almost entirely static game boards showing the characters and the locations they are in, as well as the events they are involved in. Items picked up and conversations with suspects and witnesses are shown using a variety of dialog boxes. In addition, there is a special screen for reconstructing events.

The main pros of the game

  • Art and Atmosphere: The game features a striking hand-drawn art style that effectively captures the noir aesthetic of 1970s Hollywood. Players appreciate the visual presentation and the immersive sound design.
  • Engaging Story: Many players found the overarching narrative and individual cases interesting, with a good flow and connections between the characters and events.
  • Accessibility: The gameplay mechanics are straightforward, making it approachable for players who might find other detective games too challenging. It's a good entry point for those new to the genre.
  • Fun and Enjoyable: Despite its ease, players generally found the game to be entertaining and enjoyable, with a few "aha!" moments that made the experience rewarding.

The main cons of the game

  • Lack of Challenge: A common criticism is that the game is too easy compared to similar titles like "Golden Idol." Many players felt that the puzzles did not require much deduction or critical thinking, making the gameplay feel more like busywork.
  • Short Playtime: Players noted that the game can be completed in about 3-5 hours, which some felt was too short for the price. This brevity led to a lack of replayability as players already know the solutions after one playthrough.
  • Repetitive Mechanics: The requirement to repeatedly identify the same characters across different cases was seen as tedious. Players expressed frustration over the need to find specific clues for names, even when they had already encountered them in previous scenes.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Increased Difficulty Options: Many players wished for a more challenging experience, suggesting that the game could benefit from difficulty settings or more complex puzzles.
  • Better Clue Mechanics: Users expressed a desire for a system that allows for easier tracking of clues and character names, rather than requiring players to find specific instances of information. A more intuitive UI for managing clues was also suggested.
  • Deeper Narrative Complexity: Some players felt that the plot twists and character motivations could have been more nuanced, as many of the mysteries were deemed predictable or too straightforward.
  • More Content: Suggestions for additional cases or DLC were common, as players enjoyed the game but wanted more content to extend their experience.

Summary

  • Overall, "Confidential Killings" is seen as a visually appealing and enjoyable detective game that serves as a lighter, more accessible alternative to more challenging titles in the genre, though it struggles with depth and complexity.
