A third-person adventure game starring Dawn the cat. Copycat is an emotional tale about bonds and separation, as the protagonist is replaced by the titular copycat and must find a way to return to her owner.
Copycat is a narrative third-person adventure game starring a cat stuck in a shelter. The protagonist must reclaim her home, taken from her by a mysterious impostor, while facing moral dilemmas along the way. It's the debut game of an indie Australian studio, Spoonful Of Wonder.
We play as Dawn, a cynical cat living in a shelter. She prefers freedom, and so she plans her escape - however, to her surprise, she ends up adopted by Olive, a lonely old lady, as a bond is forged between them.
This all comes to an end when her new owner falls ill and a cunning impostor takes Dawn's place, condemning her to the streets. The cat must therefore find her way back home.
Copycat has us living a feline life. We can play Dawn as a supportive pet, accompanying Olive in her time of need as her illness progresses. She can also be rather mischievous, stealing food of plates and unrolling toilet paper.
Alongside the emotional story, exploration plays a large part in the game too. At first we're limited to Olive's house and its neighborhood, but as the titular copycat appears, Dawn ends up on the streets. We'll face difficult weather, traffic, aggressive dogs and hunger, needing to find food and hunt birds. Many of the activities are Quick Time Events, requiring reflexes and timing.
Copycat includes multiple hours of professional voice acting. The soundtrack was composed by Daniel Bunting.

Game Ratings for Copycat Video Game.
Screen Hype: 6 / 10 by Lyssa Chatterton
There’s a lot to love about Copycat, especially when it comes to the art and voice acting. The dreamscape scenes are a really nice touch, showing us plenty of Shelter-Dawn’s inner thoughts and how she feels throughout the journey. The narration from different voices adds to that feeling, weaving everything together beautifully. And while the Quick Time Events can be a bit tense, they keep you engaged at the right moments.
CGMagazine: 8 / 10 by Jason Rodriguez
If you own or take care of a pet – or if you have kids who’d like a pet – do yourself a favor and play Copycat in one sitting. Make sure you have tissues ready.

They say cats always land on their feet, and Copycat proves this theory. Copycat brings a grounded and often heartfelt narrative to an authentic Australian setting and brilliantly tells a story of self-discovery. It may be far from purr-fect, but even with a few missteps in the pacing of the narrative and preciseness of the platforming, this is a charming experience that will stay with you for years to come.
