Crying Suns is a tactical roguelike set in space, where we play the role of a space fleet commander, whose task is to learn about the fate of the fallen kingdom and save the human race from total annihilation. The game is created by an independent Alt Shift studio from France.
The game is set in space after 700 years of relative peace and quiet, after Galactic Kingdoms have literally disintegrated, human robots and and androids have been deprived of their power, and humanity itself is just a hair away from extinction. In the game we play the role of Admiral Ellys Idaho, or rather his clone, awakened by the last of Omni's guards. Our task is to go to the enigmatic planet of Gehenna, consisting mainly of rocks and ice, where there is a top secret facility hiding all the discovered technological knowledge, which is the key to saving the human race.
Crying Suns is divided into six chapters, during which we travel through various systems, planets and procedurally generated anomalies, where at the very end we will visit Gehenna, a planet that hides the secrets necessary to save humanity.
Crying Suns is a roguelike game aimed at conducting tactical battles on maps divided into hexes. All skirmishes are observed from an isometric view, which helps us to better plan each of the actions taken. It is interesting that as an admiral we do not take part in skirmishes personally, but we are their active observer from the level of the bridge. However, we have a real influence on them, because we control ships on the battlefield equipped with a unique weapon.
An important aspect of the gameplay is also the exploration of planets and anomalies by our crew, in order to obtain the raw materials necessary for improvement and survival. However, we must do it with our heads, because many of the places we visit are filled with hateful opponents or strange phenomena dangerous for the lives of our charges.
In addition to fighting and exploration of space, the creators enriched the game with more than 300 random events. Most of them are related to the need to choose one of several options, which ends positively, negatively or neutrally.
The game was inspired by science-fiction classics such as Frank Herbert's Dune and the Isaac Asimov's Foundation, which can be clearly felt in the overwhelming atmosphere of playing the title.
The graphic design of the series is made entirely with the use of pixel art and is emphasized by the ambient soundtrack.
