Although dungeon crawlers are a genre almost as old as the entire video game industry, there is no shortage of productions that enrich it with new mechanics & ideas. One such game is Cursed Companions - a coop-focused production enhanced with horror elements. It was developed by the independent British studio Crimson Forge Studios.
In Cursed Companions the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP).
The gameplay is built around cursed, forbidden words that are assigned to individual players before embarking on a dungeon expedition. The game then carefully listens to everything we say into the microphone, and when one of the forbidden phrases slips from our lips, we must face the consequences. These consequences include dealing damage to our character, eliminating our allies, or awakening monsters lurking in the dungeons.
The matter is complicated by the fact that these forbidden words are used for efficient communication (such as "OK," "I think," or "no"), which is crucial because the key to success here is cooperation with the other team members.
On the other hand, our voice can also pave the way to victory, as we use it to interact with elements of the environment and to fight opponents. With specific commands, we can light torches, heal friends, disarm traps, or inflict wounds and kill monsters that stand in our way. The enemies in the game include an animated meat grinder, an aggressive moth, or even a terrifying bride.
The dungeons where the fun takes place are procedurally generated, ensuring that each expedition looks slightly different from the previous ones. As we progress, we can equip ourselves with useful items like a teleportation stone, an ice wand, or stench potions, which increase our combat potential and chances of success.
We can stand out from other players with cosmetic elements. Our base of operations is a home, which we can decorate according to our preferences.
Cursed Companions is designed for multiplayer gameplay for up to 8 players. In addition to classic dungeon expeditions filled with traps and enemies, there are a tougher challenge mode and an endless mode where we can test how long we can survive. Furthermore, the game features a traitor mode inspired by social deduction games (like the bestselling Among Us), where selected players secretly sabotage the team's efforts, and the rest must discover their identities and eliminate them before it's too late.
