Darkest Dungeon II: Inhuman Bondage is the second paid expansion for the dark fantasy tactical RPG with roguelike elements, released in 2023 by the Red Hook Studios development team.

Gameplay

In the Inhuman Bondage expansion the developers added a mini-region – Catacombs. This is a dangerous place that is accessible in both Confession mode and Kingdom mode.

It is inhabited by a faction of dangerous opponents, defeating whom allows for acquiring new and unique battle items. They are used to modify our characters to gain an advantage in battle.

Additionally, a playable hero, Abomination, was introduced. Thanks to unique mechanics, Abomination has the ability to transform from a human into a deadly monster. In order for this transformation to occur, we need to increase the stress bar assigned to the character.

User Reviews Summary generated by AI

The main pros of the game

  • Abomination Character: Many users praised the Abomination as a well-designed and fun character with unique mechanics and a compelling backstory. His two forms (human and beast) provide versatile gameplay options, and his animations are noted as top-notch.
  • Catacombs Region: The new mini-region, the Catacombs, is appreciated for its aesthetic design, challenging enemies, and unique combat items. Players enjoy the high-risk, high-reward nature of this area, which adds variety to gameplay.
  • Support for Developers: Several reviews highlight the DLC as a means to support the developers, especially since it was released alongside a significant free update (Kingdoms mode).

Summary

The main cons of the game

    • Price vs. Content: Many users feel that the $10 price tag is too high for the limited content, specifically one character and a mini-region, especially compared to previous DLCs that offered more substantial content.
    • Unlocking Mechanics: The requirement to unlock the Abomination through shrines before using him in the new Kingdoms mode was criticized as frustrating and unnecessary, leading to a negative experience for some players.
    • Difficulty of Catacombs: While some enjoyed the challenge, others found the Catacombs to be overly punishing, particularly for certain team compositions that struggle against the unique mechanics of the enemies.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

    • Economy System: Players expressed disappointment that the game still lacks a classic economy system, which was a beloved feature in the original Darkest Dungeon. Many feel that adding an economy would enhance gameplay depth.
    • More Content: Users desire additional characters or regions, arguing that the DLC should have included more than just one character and a small area. Suggestions include the addition of a full area rather than a mini-region.
    • Character Balance: Some players noted that the Abomination feels less versatile compared to other characters, leading to calls for better balance in character abilities and mechanics.

    Summary

    • Overall, while the DLC has its fans and is seen as a worthwhile addition by some, the consensus indicates that it may not meet the expectations of all players, particularly regarding its content relative to its price and the unlocking mechanics involved.
