Horror movies are a source of inspiration that creators of survival horror games often draw from. Chris Evry, an independent Scottish developer using the pseudonym Katanalevy, with projects such as Cardiac, Symphony of Seven Souls, and Daemonologie in his portfolio, decided to take this matter more literally, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the worlds of thrilling movie stories. That's how the idea for the game Dead Format was born.

Gameplay

In Dead Format, the action is viewed from a first-person perspective (FPP).

Horror worlds on VHS tapes

The driving force of the game is the investigation we conduct, which requires visiting the worlds of horror films. Access to these worlds is provided by the VHS tapes we collect. In order to gather new leads and clues and push the investigation forward, we must embark on a unique journey through the history of horror movies, visiting locations from silent films and Italian giallo (bloody crime films from the 70s and 80s), body horrors from the 1980s or even found footage flicks.

The main pros of the game

  • Visual and Audio Design: The game is praised for its stunning graphics, atmospheric design, and excellent sound design, which effectively create a haunting ambiance. The art direction captures various horror film styles beautifully.
  • Unique Concept: The premise of exploring different horror VHS tapes and the integration of live-action sequences are well-received, adding charm and creativity to the game.
  • Engaging Puzzles: Many players appreciate the clever puzzles that often require items or knowledge from different tapes, enhancing the interconnectivity of the gameplay.
  • Nostalgic References: The game is filled with references to classic horror films, making it a love letter to fans of the genre.
  • Active Development: The developer is noted for being responsive to feedback and actively making improvements to the game post-launch.

The main cons of the game

  • Stealth Mechanics: The introduction of a relentless stalker enemy in the later parts of the game frustrates many players. This enemy significantly alters the gameplay to a stealth-focused experience, which some find tedious and less engaging compared to earlier sections.
  • Save System: The lack of auto-saves or checkpoints is a common complaint. Players must return to a central hub to save, which can lead to significant backtracking and loss of progress upon dying.
  • Slow Movement: The protagonist's slow movement speed, especially while navigating large maps, is criticized for making backtracking feel tedious and drawn out.
  • Enemy Design: Some players feel that the main enemy becomes more of a nuisance than a genuine threat, detracting from the overall tension of the game.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Map System: Many players express a desire for a map to help with navigation, especially in larger areas where getting lost can be frustrating.
  • Quality of Life Improvements: Suggestions include allowing players to combine ammo to save inventory space, implementing a more forgiving save system, and improving the visibility of items in the environment.
  • More Combat Options: Some users wish there were more opportunities for combat or more diverse enemy interactions, as the focus on stealth limits the use of weapons.
  • Expanded Gameplay: There are calls for more levels or tapes to explore, as well as a more fleshed-out ending that provides a greater sense of resolution.

Summary

  • Overall, while *Dead Format* is recognized for its artistic ambition and nostalgic appeal, it faces criticism for its gameplay mechanics, particularly in the latter half of the game. Players recommend it, especially for horror fans, but with an awareness of its limitations.
