Detention is a side-scrolling horror/adventure game, developed by Taiwanese Red Candle Games. The game is a debut project of the studio, established in 2015 by six individuals.
The action of the game takes us to Taiwan during the 1960s, right in the middle of the martial law period that lasted for 38 years. Our destination is Greenwood – a high school located in a secluded, mountainous area. The game tells a story of two students who discover that their school has been transformed into a place inhabited by wicked monsters known from local legends as the evil itself. Our heroes have to find a way to survive and discover the origin of the unchaste powers.
Detention for PC, SWITCH and PS4 mixes adventure–game and stealth–game elements – we explore locations, gather items, and solve puzzles. Keep in mind that our heroes are practically defenseless in open combat – the players need to avoid detection, lay traps, and if the situation is dire – escape.
The game uses a well-known point-n-click interface, which surprisingly is used not only in case of puzzles, but also during occasional arcade sequences. The world is two-dimensional, with left or right being the only possible movements, however the maps are designed to enable players to explore the areas freely.
During the development cycle, Red Candle Games decided to dive into Taiwanese and Chinese mythology, as well as taoistic and buddist beliefs. As a result, the encountered monsters and locations are much different than what we could experience in standard games (especially horror ones), giving Detention a unique feel.
