Resident Evil VII: Biohazard for PC, PS4 and XONE is an action-adventure survival horror. Gameplay of the two former instalments of this incredibly-popular series switched from thrilling to rather dynamic and impressively-looking. The seventh instalment, however, returns to the series' roots.

Still, this does not mean that the creators from one of Capcom's studios went old-school all the way. The developers chose the most important survival horror elements, such as a heavy atmosphere, the difficulty, and always-too-scarce ammunition, and then blended it with modern elements, like the first-person perspective and extensive exploration sequences.

Resident Evil VII: Biohazard was announced in 2016 on E3 expo where the fans and press gave a warm welcome to the change of perspective and emphasis on horror elements.

Resident Evil Game Series

Resident Evil is a series of Japanese survival horrors published by Capcom. Shinji Mikami and Tokuro Fujiwara are mainly responsible for its creation. The series started on March 22, 1996, with the release of Resident Evil (also known as Biohazard) on the PlayStation console. It was during its marketing campaign that the term survival horror was coined. The prototype of the series is the game Sweet Home released in 1989, based on the film of the same name. Fujiwara himself was responsible for it, and many elements, such as QTE sequences or inventory management, were transferred to the Biohazard series. Since then, it has grown steadily, gaining more game installments, as well as movie, animation, comic book and novel adaptations.

The Hard-Earned Success that Nearly Killed Resident Evil

One of the best – and in many people's opinion, definitely the best – instalments of the Resident Evil series was created in pain, producing not only the original game, but also two others. And also driving the whole series into a dead end.

Expansion

December 12, 2017

Action

A free expansion to a well-received survival horror game - Resident Evil VII: Biohazard developed by Capcom. The game allows the player to assume the role of a new, yet perfectly known to the series’ fans character – a mercenary by the name of Chris Redfield, working for Umbrella Co., which deals with gathering data from the abandoned Umbrella facilities. Together with his companions, Chris comes to the Bakers’ residence to investigate its ruins and the underground tunnels. Unlike Ethan Winters – the main protagonist of the base game – the new character is a well-trained soldier, who has a modern arsenal at his disposal. This time around, the gameplay does not revolve around sneaking past enemies; on the contrary, the player gets to fight the enemies with all guns blazing (the expansion introduces a new type of monster). Not a Hero is available free to all those who own the base game. Additionally, players who buy Resident Evil VII: Biohazard – Gold edition also have access to the add-on, as well as the base game and three more paid expansions.

IGN: 7.7 / 10 by Chloi Rad

Resident Evil 7 grounds itself in elements that made the original great while still indulging in a risky new shift in style that both helps and hurts the beloved formula in equal measure. But it’s also the closest a numbered sequel has come to recapturing Resident Evil’s slow, but thrilling and atmospheric adventure game roots in a while — a welcome return that I truly hope to see more of in the future.

Resident Evil goes back to its founding principles for a more cohesive and chilling breed of horror game that stops short of greatness.

Nintendo Life: 3 / 10 by Oliver Reynolds

The fact that Resident Evil 7 performed so poorly when other cloud entries have been comparatively strong really brings home the fact that, although mileage may vary, these issues are completely out of your control. On our evidence, there’s simply no way we can recommend Resident Evil 7 to Switch owners, even if it’s the only option available. It’s a great game utterly ruined by awful performance, and yet more evidence for cloud gaming skeptics that the tech just isn't yet consistent enough to be viable.

The main pros of the game

  • Atmosphere and Immersion: The game excels in creating a tense and unsettling atmosphere, with detailed environments that evoke a sense of dread. The first-person perspective enhances immersion, making players feel directly involved in the horror.
  • Engaging Story: The narrative focuses on Ethan Winters' search for his missing wife, weaving a compelling tale around the Baker family that keeps players intrigued throughout the game.
  • Character Design: The Baker family members are memorable and well-developed antagonists, adding depth to the horror experience. Players found them both terrifying and tragic.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The game emphasizes survival horror elements, such as resource management, limited ammo, and the need for strategic decision-making. Puzzles and exploration are integral to the gameplay.
  • High Replay Value: Multiple difficulty levels, unlockable content, and DLCs provide additional gameplay experiences and encourage replayability.

The main cons of the game

  • Enemy Variety: Some players criticized the limited variety of enemies, particularly in the later sections of the game, which can become repetitive.
  • Pacing Issues: The game's pacing is strong in the beginning but tends to slow down in the latter parts, particularly during the ship and mine sections, which some players found less engaging.
  • Simplicity of Puzzles: While some enjoyed the puzzle design, others found them too straightforward and lacking the complexity that previous Resident Evil games offered.
  • Final Act: A few reviews noted that the final act felt more conventional and action-oriented compared to the tension-filled earlier parts, which detracted from the overall horror experience.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • More Complex Puzzles: Some players desired more intricate and challenging puzzles that would require deeper exploration and problem-solving, similar to earlier titles in the series.
  • Expanded Enemy Types: A desire for a greater variety of enemies to keep encounters fresh and challenging throughout the game was expressed.
  • Additional Backtracking: Players missed the backtracking elements present in previous Resident Evil games, which often added depth to exploration and storytelling.
  • More Character Development: While the Baker family was well-received, some players wanted more depth in the protagonist and additional character interactions to enhance emotional engagement.

Summary

  • Overall, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is heralded as a successful return to the franchise's survival horror roots, delivering a gripping and immersive experience that resonates with both longtime fans and newcomers.
