Distant Worlds 2: Return of the Shakturi is the first major expansion for the 4X space RTS, released in March 2022. The DLC was developed by the authors of the original, namely Code Force studio.

Novelties in the expansion

As the title suggests, Distant Worlds 2: Return of the Shakturi focuses on the Shakturi, a sinister race of alien beings from another corner of the universe. They caused the previous great cataclysm, bringing the galaxy to the brink of destruction. Now the threat from them has once again loomed on the horizon, and dealing with them before it's too late will test the capabilities of even the greatest empires.

A new full crisis and endgame story is associated with Shakturi. Moreover, the return of this race was used to enrich the gameplay with genetic engineering, the results of which are modified beings and creatures known as Rift Striders, sent by Shakturi for reconnaissance and combat. In addition to this, invaders can wage biological warfare, weakening other factions with the help of plagues, as well as use psychic abilities, which increase their combat potential and diplomatic or scientific capabilities.
