Dragon Quest VII is the seventh installment of the cult jRPG series, originally released in 2000. Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined described here was prepared by Square Enix (the publisher overseeing the brand) and Hexadrive (the developer). It is a comprehensive remake of the classic jRPG.

Refreshed graphics and other features in the remake

What primarily distinguishes Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined from the original is its three-dimensional graphic design. The developers of the remake prepared dolls based on the characters designed for the original by Akira Toriyama, which they then transformed into three-dimensional models of various heroes. The locations through which the adventure leads us are designed in the style of dioramas.

Refreshed combat system

This is not the end, as the developers also focused on the combat system. The fights are still taking place in turn-based mode, but they have become more dynamic. The creators implemented the ability to change the speed of battles or remove breaks between turns, as well as provided us with the function of automatic battles. The icing on the cake is the ability to defeat weaker enemies with a single blow, without entering battle mode.

TheGamer: 4 / 5 by Ryan Thompson-Bamsey

Reimagined solves that problem without sacrificing what made the original special. For series veterans, it's a chance to revisit a flawed classic in its best possible form. For newcomers, it's finally a reasonable entry point into one of the franchise's most rewarding narratives. And, for the first time, I can say I’ve finished DQ7 without needing a week of rest.

Worth Playing: 9 / 10 by Chris "Atom" DeAngelus

Overall, Dragon Quest VII: Reimagined is a fantastic remake that hits all the right marks. I don't necessarily agree with all of the changes made, but they work with what the game is going for. It's an engaging, fun, and well-made Dragon Quest game that is among the best of the franchise. There's no better way to play than Reimagined, especially if you are interested in Dragon Quest VII but felt intimidated by the time commitment. Even longtime fans of the series will find new surprises and new experiences to enjoy.

Daily Mirror: 4 / 5 by Aaron Potter

Sure, this may ultimately come at the cost of ever being considered truly definitive due to its more streamlined approach, but this is still the same journey and characters series veterans previously fell in love with, made easier for newcomers to enjoy thanks to a revised battle system and less tedious approach to exploration. Topped off by a wonderful art style that brings a fresh perspective to classic events, and Reimagned can comfortably make a case for being the best Dragon Quest remake yet. That’s certainly true in my case.
