Dragonseeds is an action-packed strategy game developed and published by Jaleco Entertainment. The production went exclusively to the PS1 console.

Story

The story told in Dragonseeds begins when scientists discover the remains of an unknown being, which they call a dragon. After several years of research into the DNA of the mysterious organism, they manage to reconstruct it; this enables them to start mass production of these creatures and, as a result, leads to the birth of a new sports discipline in which dragons are put up to arena fights. Players take on the role of one of the coaches of these reptiles, trying to gain the desired fame.

Mechanics

The pillar of gameplay in Dragonseeds are the aforementioned dragon fights. Before starting the game we choose one of six monsters (Saurian, Winged, Beetle, Wasp, Nature, Crustacean), which differ not only in terms of appearance, but also in terms of the elements, which they use in battle: fire, water and electricity. Our choice is important because the turn-based battles are based on the rules of rock-paper-scissorsWhile fire is effective against electricity (but loses to water), electricity can be used against water (but is weak to fire), while water can easily handle fire (although it can be crushed by electricity).

But that's not all - in order to face the opponent, it is also necessary to equip the monster with weapons and shield, as well as skillfully select their position on the battlefield. The reptile can retain small, medium or long distance from the enemy, but only by being close it can perform physical attacks; when put farther from the enemy it can provoke the opponent or send magical projectiles based on elements in their direction.

By winning the subsequent duels and climbing the career ladder, we gain money that we can use to buy new weapons for our dragon; the monsters themselves also gain experience and evolve into more and more powerful forms. However, it is worth paying attention, because the authors decided to implement a permadeath mechanic - if a dragon belonging to us dies on the battlefield, there is nothing else to do but to start the game from scratch.

Game modes

Dragonseeds not only enables us to have fun solo, but also fight against other players in the local multiplayer mode.

Technical aspects

The skirmishes in the arena were enriched with three-dimensional graphics - all the rest of Dragonseeds' visual setting was implemented in 2D. Thanks to the original functionality, the production creates dragons based on saved game states from other games (stored on a memory card), which are then sent to duel in the arena.
