An original game from the independent studio Voids Within. Dystopika is about creating dystopian, cyberpunk metropolises. It's not a proper city builder and we don't have any specific goals or boundries. Once we've created a city we can use photo mode to save our work.

Dystopika is not so much a video game as a unique tool that allows us to create dystopian, cyberpunk metropolises. In terms of the idea for the gameplay, the work of the independent studio Voids Within brings to mind titles such as Townscaper or Tiny Glade. As for the atmosphere, the game primarily evokes associations with the movie series Blade Runner, especially with the film Blade Runner 2049.

Mechanics

In Dystopika there are no goals or limitations set for us, and the whole range of possibilities is available from the beginning of the game. Watching the action from a bird's eye view, we build futuristic metropolises in the game. For this purpose, we construct various buildings, led by towering skyscrapers, and then use a special brush that "animates" our city, adding bright neon lights, billboards and holograms to it, as well as enriching it with street traffic.

  • Relaxing Gameplay: Players appreciate the lack of pressure from management mechanics, allowing for a stress-free building experience. The game is described as a meditative sandbox where creativity flourishes.
  • Customization Options: The ability to adjust building heights, orientations, and environmental settings enhances the creative freedom. Users enjoy the feature to upload personal images for billboards and customize various aspects of the city.
  • Photo Mode: The dedicated photo mode allows players to take high-quality screenshots and create cinematic views of their cities, which many find enjoyable.

The main cons of the game

  • Limited Content: Many reviews mention a lack of variety in buildings and props, leading to a repetitive gameplay experience over time. Players express a desire for more diverse structures and smaller buildings to fill spaces.
  • Clunky Controls: Users report that the controls can be confusing and unintuitive, making it difficult to place objects accurately. The absence of grid snapping for roads and other props is frequently highlighted as a significant drawback.
  • UI and UX Issues: The user interface has been criticized for being difficult to navigate, with small font sizes and lack of clear labels for decorations and props. This can lead to frustration during gameplay.
  • Dark Visuals: Some players find the overall aesthetic too dark, making it challenging to see what they are placing in the game. Suggestions for brighter daytime settings have been made.

  • Enhanced Customization Tools: Suggestions include options for more detailed customization of props, buildings, and possibly a tutorial to help new players understand controls and mechanics better.

Summary

  • Overall, while Dystopika offers a unique and relaxing experience for fans of city-building games in a dystopian setting, it also has areas for improvement that players hope will be addressed in future updates.
