Erenshor is a single-player role-playing game simulating an MMO. It was created by the independent studio Burgee Media. The world of the game is inhabited by AI-controlled characters. They have unique personalities, communicate and form guilds, giving the impression of being real players.

Gameplay

The gameplay looks like a typical MMORPG. After choosing a character class, we enter an open fantasy world. Unlike other titles of the mentioned genre, instead of real people, we are surrounded by "SimPlayers" controlled by artificial intelligence. They can collect treasures, advance and create guilds, and even invite us to group activities, such as raids. They often comment on what is happening during combat or sometimes ask us to share the loot.

The main pros of the game

  • Nostalgic Experience: Many players appreciate the game for its ability to capture the essence of classic MMORPGs, particularly titles like EverQuest and Final Fantasy XI. The game brings back the feeling of exploration and adventure that defined early MMOs.
  • Simulated Players: The presence of AI-driven "SimPlayers" creates a lively world, making it feel populated without the toxicity often found in real player interactions. Players enjoy the immersion and social dynamics these AI characters provide.
  • Freedom and Flexibility: Players can progress at their own pace without the pressure of being part of an active guild or dealing with toxic players. The game allows for solo play without missing out on the MMO experience.
  • Content and Updates: The game is rich in content, with frequent updates from the developer, who is responsive to community feedback. Players appreciate the amount of content available even in early access.
  • Unique Questing and Exploration: The lack of quest markers and hand-holding encourages players to read dialogue and explore the world, which many find refreshing and engaging.

The main cons of the game

  • Clunky UI and Mechanics: Some users find the user interface to be cumbersome and outdated. Interactions, inventory management, and other mechanics can feel clunky at times.
  • Limited Class Diversity: The game currently offers only four classes, which some players feel leads to a lack of variety in gameplay. There are calls for more unique class identities and skills.
  • Difficulty Balance: Several players expressed frustration with the difficulty balance, noting that some enemies can be overwhelmingly strong compared to their expected difficulty. This can lead to confusion about where to level up.
  • Lack of Multiplayer Features: While the game simulates an MMO experience, some players miss the actual multiplayer aspect and the social interactions that come with it. There are suggestions for adding features like a friends list or guilds.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Minimap and Quest Markers: Many players feel that the game would benefit from having a minimap or some form of quest markers to help navigate the world and track objectives.
  • Expanded Class Options: Players are requesting the addition of more classes and unique skills to enhance gameplay variety and depth.
  • Improved AI Behavior: Some users would like to see more dynamic and engaging AI behaviors from SimPlayers, such as more varied interactions and goals.
  • Enhanced Crafting and Economy Systems: While crafting exists, players are looking for more depth and engagement in crafting mechanics, as well as a more interactive economy.
  • Better Feedback Mechanisms: Players wish for clearer feedback in combat, such as hit indicators or clearer spell effects, to enhance the overall gameplay experience.

Conclusion

  • Erenshor stands out as a nostalgic tribute to classic MMORPGs, successfully blending single-player mechanics with an MMO feel. While it has its shortcomings, particularly in UI and class diversity, the game's unique concept and the developer's commitment to improvement have resonated well with its audience. Players who appreciate old-school MMO vibes without the social pressures of real multiplayer are likely to find much enjoyment in Erenshor.
