A platform game with adventure elements, in which we get to the beyond worlds. Playing as a young soul named Ki, we travel through a fairy-tale land full of dangers, trying to regain the lost memories of the heroine.
Evergate is an adventure platform game developed by the independent Stone Lantern Games studio. The game was inspired by productions like Child of Light and The NeverEnding Story, and was created thanks to a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter.
Evergate takes players on a journey to the hereafter, where souls get rid of their memories from their previous lives so that they can start their next ones. The heart of each of them is the fire (Soulflame) - the power connecting them with the Source, which, according to legends, is entrusted to them by the deities ruling this world.
The protagonist of the game, a young soul named Ki, decides to regain the memory of past events and unite with her soul mate waiting for her in the depths of the worlds beyond. To do this, she has to travel through a dangerous land and face many obstacles.
In Evergate, the action is shown from the side perspective. During the game players travel across the vast worlds divided into four domains, each one ruled by a different deity. Numerous Sources have been distributed across different levels - after directing the power of the flame at one of them in such a way that its radius passes through the nearby crystals, Ki can use their unique properties. This allows her to teleport (swapping places with the Source she was aiming at), create shock waves that allow for long jumps or even destroy the obstacles on her way to the source.
This mechanics is the foundation of both exploration and the puzzles waiting to be solved; there are more than a hundred of them, and they are all about getting to the exit. Players can freely experiment, looking for new solutions or trying to use all available crystals and combine the effects of their actions in chain reactions. Combat follows the same formula. Battles occur in the form of nightmares which trouble Ki and which grow significantly stronger.
By retrieving memories, Ki not only unlocks new types of crystals, but also gains access to new locations.
Evergate has colourful, hand-drawn 2.5D visuals. Players are accompanied by a soundtrack that creates a fairy-tale atmosphere.

Game Ratings for Evergate Video Game.
GamesCreed: 3 / 5 by Junior Onunkwo
Evergate would be much more suited for a younger audience who love to solve puzzles. The story is intriguing, as you would like to guide the protagonist back to earth.
NintendoWorldReport: 5 / 10 by Willem Hilhorst
The puzzles rely on timing instead of cleverness, the platforming relies on planning instead of skill, and the movement becomes limiting due to the conditions before it can be used. I really wished I could give this game some higher praise. Perhaps players who are looking for a slow platformer that rewards trial and error without much gratification can get a kick out of Evergate. But personally I am not planning on ever playing it again.
Movies Games and Tech: 8 / 10 by Diogo Miguel
Whilst it can feel unnecessarily punishing at times, there’s no doubt that Evergate still has plenty to offer and it’s certainly an interesting game to experience and more so for those out there who enjoy solving puzzles.
