In 1997, Digital Image Design studio released its F-22 Raptor fighter simulator, titled F-22: Air Dominance Fighter. The production was respected by gamers and the media, and even won industry awards. Years later, MicroProse Software released a refreshed version of this item, adapted to new standards and titled in the same way.

Gameplay at the controls of a fighter jet

In F-22: Air Dominance Fighter we sit at the controls of the title fighter aircraft for most of the time. The production allows us to take part in dozens of missions set in the Red Sea basin. In the course of them we face enemies operating in the air and on the ground and sea, and use a variety of weapons including cluster bombs, unguided missiles and air-to-air missiles.

The main pros of the game

  • Nostalgia Factor: Many players appreciate the return of a classic from the 90s, evoking fond memories of their gaming past.
  • Modern Compatibility: The game runs smoothly on modern operating systems (Windows 10/11) without the need for extensive tweaks or emulation.
  • Improved Graphics: While retaining its retro style, the game features enhanced graphics, including higher resolutions and anti-aliasing, making it visually appealing for its age.
  • Gameplay Mechanics: The balance between realism and arcade-style play is praised, offering enjoyable air combat mechanics and a variety of missions.
  • Community Engagement: Developers are noted for their active communication with the community and quick responses to issues, especially regarding control mapping.
  • Support for TrackIR: Enhanced support for head tracking technology adds to the immersive experience.

The main cons of the game

  • Control Mapping Issues: Initially, there was a lack of proper HOTAS (Hands On Throttle and Stick) support, which frustrated many users. Although updates have improved this, some users still find the control configuration clumsy and not fully customizable.
  • Occasional Crashes: Some players reported crashes during gameplay, particularly during transitions between different views.
  • Price Concerns: The $20-$25 price point is considered steep by some users, especially given the game's age and the limited content compared to modern titles.
  • Limited Dynamic Campaigns: Users miss the dynamic campaign features found in the sequel, F-22 Total Air War, and feel that the scripted missions can be somewhat restrictive.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Full HOTAS Support: While some improvements have been made, users desire more comprehensive and customizable control mapping options for HOTAS systems.
  • Dynamic Campaigns: Players express a desire for the inclusion of dynamic campaigns similar to those in F-22 Total Air War, which would enhance replayability and engagement.
  • Improved Documentation: Some users noted that the training missions and in-game documentation are lacking, suggesting that better guidance or tutorials would be beneficial.
  • Ultrawide Resolution Support: A few reviews mention that certain ultrawide resolutions are not currently supported, which could limit the experience for players with modern displays.

Summary

  • Overall, F-22: Air Dominance Fighter has been well-received for its nostalgic value and modern updates, though there are notable areas for improvement, particularly in control customization and content depth.
