Creating functioning factories from scratch is an activity to which a number of strategy games have been devoted. Lebleby Games, an independent studio from Turkey, has developed its own game of this type in the form of the Factory Planner project described here. Compared with the others, the work in question stands out due to its convention, as the gameplay here has been enriched with elements of a card game.
In Factory Planner the events are viewed from a bird's eye view. As in most other industrial-themed productions, our task is to build a prosperous factory. To do this, we create increasingly complex production chains, manage employees and take care of the energy supply.
We do everything by playing cards of objects, organizations, engineers and resources. Each of them has a specific function here (some are used to collect raw materials, others to produce goods, and others, among others, to distribute energy or increase the efficiency of our complex), and has been equipped with unique inputs and outputs. We must select them depending on our current needs and ideas for developing the factory.
As we progress, we gain access to more and more advanced materials, so that wood and iron are joined by sulfur or uranium. In addition, over time we create new cards and upgrade existing ones.
We connect individual cards to each other using production lines for solids, liquids and energy, which can collapse at 90 degrees. In addition, we can assign engineers to storage and production units. With them, we gain access to new recipes or reduce energy consumption at a given point.
The latter is important because without power the factory is unable to operate. Energy is produced by special generators, which must be in sufficient quantity so that demand does not exceed supply (which leads to shutting down the entire system). We use distributors and switches to control its flow.
Getting all this under control is facilitated by the game's built-in warning system, which informs you of any problems encountered with power supply, raw materials or storage space (shortages of which can bring the whole machine to a halt).
