Fallout 4 VR for PC is a special version of 2015’s Fallout 4 developed with HTC Vive VR headset in mind. The production offers everything that the original did but the systems of combat, crafting, and building were altered in order to be compatible with VR specification.

Plot

The story of Fallout 4 VR starts in the suburbs of the American Boston, right before a tragic nuclear detonation. During the short introduction, we meet the protagonist’s family and create our character (a man or a woman) by making changes in his/her appearance and distributing skill points. Moments later, the aforementioned detonation occurs, and the protagonist makes it to Vault 111, a fallout shelter. The actual story starts 200 years later when the main hero/heroine comes out of the bunker to the surface and starts his/her fight for survival in the hostile post-apocalyptic environment. Our main task is to find the remaining family members.

Fallout 4 VR is a splendid example of what every fan of VR hopes the industry is working towards. This is a AAA title that offers hundreds of hours of immersive, atmospheric gameplay that manages to nail the feel and aesthetic of VR without feeling like a cheap imitation of the main game. There are still a few flaws, and we would love to see Bethesda roll out mods and DLC from the main game, but in the meantime, it's an experience that's worth it for fans of VR and Fallout alike.

  • Community Support: The modding community has significantly improved the game, with essential mods like FRIK enhancing gameplay and immersion.
  • Large Open World: The game offers a vast world to explore, which is a rarity in VR, making it appealing for those who enjoy open-world RPGs.

The main cons of the game

  • Poorly Executed VR Port: Many reviews describe it as a lazy port with minimal effort put into adapting the game for VR, lacking features that enhance immersion, such as manual weapon reloading and two-handed gun handling.
  • Technical Issues: Users reported frequent crashes, bugs, and performance issues, which can detract from the gameplay experience.
  • Awkward Controls: The control scheme is often seen as clunky and unintuitive, requiring players to adapt significantly to navigate menus and interact with the environment.
  • No DLC Integration: Players expressed frustration about the lack of DLC content in the VR version, requiring them to own the standard version to access additional content.
  • Limited Accessibility: The game does not adequately support seated play, which can be a significant drawback for players who cannot stand for long periods.

The features or elements that are missing from the game according to users

  • Body and Hand Representation: Players noted the absence of a visible character body and hands, which breaks immersion.
  • Manual Reloading: The lack of manual reloading for weapons is seen as a major oversight, reducing the tactile feel of combat.
  • Improved Interaction: Many players expected more interactive elements in the world, such as the ability to manually open doors or interact with objects in a more immersive way.
  • Height Adjustment Options: Users mentioned the need for better height adjustment settings for seated play, which is not sufficiently addressed in the game.
  • User Interface Improvements: The VR adaptation of the Pip-Boy and other interfaces is considered awkward and poorly designed, making navigation cumbersome.

Summary

  • Overall, while Fallout 4 VR has the potential to offer a unique and immersive experience, it suffers from significant technical and design shortcomings that require extensive modding to improve. Many players recommend purchasing the game only during sales and emphasize the importance of being prepared to modify the game for a better experience.
