Mechanics related to time loops are most often encountered in roguelike productions or those containing elements of this genre. Independent studio TacoEaters, in its debut project titled Fear the Timeloop, decided to incorporate them into a survival horror game evoking associations with remakes of the second and third installments of the Resident Evil series.
In Fear the Timeloop we view the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). At first glance, we are dealing here with a classic representative of the survival horror genre, in which we wander through a dark hospital and face the enemies lurking around us. We eliminate bloodthirsty monsters standing in our way, making use of firearms and white weapons. There is also no shortage of puzzle solving and equipment management.
The time loop mentioned in the introduction makes our progress reset every quarter of an hour. However, over the course of successive playthroughs, we retain our memories of previous playthroughs, allowing us to more efficiently navigate the environment, face threats or gain access to more locations.
Individual areas are unlocked with the acquisition of items and skills, with the help of which we adapt the character to our individual style of play. A dialogue system has also been implemented here. Conversations allow us to make choices and indicate the direction we will take within a given loop.
The main character of the game Fear the Timeloop is Sheriff James Cooper. The pursuit of a serial killer ended for him with a wake-up call in the gloomy Saint Heritage Hospital. A severe wound on his body makes the man slowly bleed out. Although the protagonist has only 15 minutes before the hemorrhage takes his life, he gets stuck in a time loop, causing him to wake up again after death. The policeman is not doomed to a lonely crossing, as he can count on contact with his deputy - Rose Watters.
