A grand strategy game set during World War 1. The developers of Fields of History: The Great War have created a world map that reflects the realities of the era, expanded by historical data and real events. We can pick a country of our choosing and oversee its development.
The genre of so-called grand strategy games set in the first half of the 20th century is dominated by Paradox Interactive and its Hearts of Iron series. The small Irish company Wolferos Productions, in collaboration with MicroProse Software, decided to challenge this dominance by developing a project set during World War I (known as the Great War) called Fields of History: The Great War.
Interestingly, this production began as a mod for Hearts of Iron IV, titled The Great War. It received such a warm reception that it was eventually decided to transform it into a commercial project.
The gameplay in Fields of History: The Great War takes place on a three-dimensional political map of the world. To faithfully represent the "geographical, topographical, and meteorological conditions of the early 20th century," the map is divided into over 10,000 provinces. Additionally, it features all the major historical leaders of the era.
During the game we take control of a chosen country, and all matters related to its development rest on our shoulders. Our main goal is to dominate our neighbors and thus implement our vision, often redefining the course of history. The game requires us to oversee aspects important to the country and how it functions, such as the economy, technological development, military, as well as politics and diplomacy.
Our range of possibilities is determined by the level of autonomy and the degree of development of the country. Empires and sovereign nations have a different array of options compared to semi-independent states forced to look up to their "big brothers." We govern through national decisions and decrees, which can have both immediate and lasting consequences. With the latter, we must not forget the needs of the civilian population, as their dissatisfaction can destabilize our country for a long time. Additionally, the functioning of the country is influenced by historical events and the actions of neighbors.
Although many problems can be resolved through skillful diplomacy, sooner or later, military actions occur. The game allows us to work on various technologies (especially military ones), recruit different military units, and implement diverse equipment. There are opportunities for bombing enemy positions or using chemical warfare.
Success on the battlefield is ensured not only by appropriate tactics (such as encircling enemy divisions in "pockets") but also by creating and maintaining strategic supply lines or staffing key positions (officers) with the right people. Moreover, we can gain an advantage over enemies in less overt ways, using spies or organizing covert operations (such as sabotage, technology theft, or inciting the population to revolt).
